I watched the entirety of this show called “Station Eleven”. Was excellent. Powerful stuff. Possibly the most accurate portrayal of an extinction event.Anyway, for the Hams: one of the guys finds a working ham radio that he uses to communicate with others. It’s a device about the size of a carton of cigs, on a a small tripod. If you have seen this and know what that was, please tell me if that is a good introductory type device or pro-level thing. This rabbit hole has been on my radar. Thx.

@Unabart I don't know that specific device but the torrent of Chinese electronics that buries us nowadays includes a lot of inexpensive, decent handheld ham radios. I would look at Baofeng. Make sure it is "type approved" for your country of residence. A big decision a new ham needs to make is are you interested in talking across town (handheld VHF/UHF radio on a repeater network) or across the world? (Desktop HF radio and a big-ass antenna)

@Judge_Earl_P_Thayton ChatGPT tells me this was an Icom IC-705 radio and more money than I want to spent. I have 3 handheld radios. All packed away for another week, so I’ll revisit this once I unpack and settle. 🤘🏼

@Judge_Earl_P_Thayton As a kid, my family owned a junkyard and in a junk car i found a radio that was am/fm/weather and shortwave. My grandfather showed me how to tune in to the shortwave channels. Used to spend summer nights with that long ass antenna tweaking it around and hearing people blabbing in different languages and the static had this etheral spookiness to it. I suppose, as an adult, the world is my oyster and I should plunk down for a nice radio and get licensed and shit.

@Unabart I still listen to shortwave sometimes! Even with an ocean of digital streams available, there is something about the old-school cool of radio waves.

@Judge_Earl_P_Thayton My radio was nearly identical to this. I remember the wraparound info on the front and top. Every night with that thing until it just didn’t turn on anymore. Today version of me would have cracked it open to try and fix it!
