"During past century, resource extraction has doubled every 20 years or so. Indeed, humanity reached a grim milestone in 2021, when the global quantity of human-made mass — that is, the total weight of all things our species manufactured or constructed — surpassed the total weight of all living plant, animal, and microbial biomass on this planet. And worse yet, that mass of human-made stuff continues to grow, year by year, even as the natural world diminishes further."https://scheerpost.com/2026/01/15/were-racing-down-the-highway-to-a-mad-max-world/

@gerrymcgovern Yes this is an issue but there are solutions that allow us to continue to feed ourselves and enjoy a decent standard of living. These solutions involve a circular economy, re-use everything. And we have for the most part the technology to do this, only lacking the energy. And we have the technology to provide the energy we only need to implement on scale.

@gerrymcgovern When I was a little girl I was shown a movie which changed my whole life. Back in those days they'd wheel in a big reel to reel projector. The movie, images seared in my mind, showed a bell jar. Two fruit flies, air and a pile of food were sealed inside. The flies begin multiplying rapidly, then slowly they all died. They didn't run out of food or air, they died from pollution was the point, as I recall. The Mad Max movie seemed to connect to that traumatic memory. 1/2

@jawarajabbi @gerrymcgovern This and not unlimited raw resources is why we need a circular economy.

@gerrymcgovern If I look back, it was around the time when Mad Max came out that I made a huge pivot. Previously aiming at American corporate success, I instead joined the Peace Corps. I learned to live in what we called third world conditions. Met a guy with a foreign passport and the ability to fix things and married him. We had two boys who I purposefully put in a very socio -economically mixed school. I tell folks that I raised my kids to survive the Mad Max scenario. Because I did. 2/2

@jawarajabbi @gerrymcgovern We avoided the Max Max scenerio by making gasoline too expensive.
