Always a good day to switch. My recommendation is to use both for a while, alternating, until you get comfortable with the decentralized system. Non corporate media is needed.#x #mastodon #instagram #pixelfed #whatsapp #facebook #friendica #youtube #peertube #tiktok #loops

@Charlotte Aten Matrix is also a good solution, and has fuller encryption than XMPP.Signal is centralized. It may be good now — so was Telegram, once. That may not last.

@ferret I have a bad impression of Matrix, both in terms of culture and pedigree (that Amdocs company sounds sketchy). There are people who say it's lacking technically, but I can't speak to this myself.

@caten "There are people who say it's lacking technically, but I can't speak to this myself."And you are correct: Matrix is just an open protocol (like so many others before) whereas #XMPP is an open #IETF standard. So, yes, Matrix is "technically" lacking open IETF standarization.

@gnemmi I meant in more of an algorithmic sense (e.g. using JSON for exchanging large quantities of data no human will read), but fair enough.

@caten oh! Yes, absolutely. I think you may find this article to be of particular interest maybe.https://www.process-one.net/blog/stop-telling-us-xmpp-should-use-json/

@Charlotte Aten It's an open standard. You don't need to engage with the Matrix Foundation. My server is Continuwuity, which is run by a team of incredibly queer volunteers.

my experience with matrix: a friend runs synapse, hates it. I ran continuwuity, dislike it not being stable yet as far as development goes. XMPP is old stable and boring and "just works", and is lighter to run on my server, so I use that.CC: @Charlotte Aten@mathstodon.xyz

@eltheanine The main issue is XMPP doesn't encrypt file attachments. The only thing that can be encrypted is the content of messages. I also prefer Matrix for its bridges; it's easier to on-board people if they know they can still contact people on other platforms using it. Continuwuity has been stable for me.

@ferret@hub.workersofthe.world mm good point re attachments.I use a bunch of bridges with xmpp; irc, whatsapp, discord, and they work great. Yeah, bridges are a must for onboarding folks that are on the fence.
