@imyxh Right now, none of it is hand sewn. It's all going through 3-4 layers of 14g canvas + webbing, it might be possible to do with a stitching awl, but it'd be difficult.

@neauoire What material(s) are you using for the outer and the liner?

@mart0 it's all made from 1m of 14g canvas. The liner is a large drybag of PVC on tight netting.

@neauoire Double up the bottom!I have been making bags for almost 10 years, so I've seen a lot of 10 year bags. To get a 10 years + bag I opt for 1000D Cordura nylon. Bigger cost at the start (and it's synthetic), but the bag will last for decades unless you are an abusive bike messenger. Canvas facing wear + UV (+ salt air for you) might wear out faster than you think. Waxing it will help.

@mart0 There's 4 layers at the bottom :) The bag I've clone here I've used 15 years, I hope it lasts somewhere around that time. I noticed how the wear happened and re-enforced these areas! It has done surprisingly well considering the awful weather conditions I've dragged it through.

@neauoire 💪I look forward to the update in 10 years. Be careful making your own bags can be a slippery slope 😅

A made a backpack!I've used one of these fantastic canvas commuter bags from Banjo Brothers for over 15 years, but having finally worn it out to the point where the canvas was so brittle that you could poke holes with your index finger, I didn't have the heart to throw it away after so many years of faithful service. So, I cut all the seams off, layed it all out, traced each part on fresh 14oz canvas and tried my best to make a new one. I've taken the opportunity to improve some things.I certainly hope that it may last for another 15 years.https://wiki.xxiivv.com/site/commuter_backpack.html#theFabrique

This is the sort of wear 15 years around the world does to our backpacks.

@neauoire superb! Reminds me of Sapper’s satchel in Blade Runner 2049. I’m repairing a discarded mapcase now, thank you for the inspiration.

@neauoire Whooa, it turned out so well! I love the buckle with the red strap, such a nice touch. I'm curious how you did the shoulder straps though, do you have pictures from the other side?

@rostiger Oh X) I'll take some! Gimme a minute, but I've reused those from the original backpack, I just redid the webbing on the seems.

@neauoire wonderful job! you must have a pretty heavy-duty sewing machine, I don't think mine could handle such canvas.

@wim_v12e yeah it's designed to make sail and punch through many layers of dacron :) The hats we made were the first time using it to make clothes.
