@vkc what's the down side? If I buy a phone from the supported list and install GrapheneOS on it, and then Google Play Services in a sandbox, and Google Play Store… is there anything I can't do on this phone that I could do on a mainstream build of Android?

@progo @vkc some apps that enforce Googles new proprietary anti tamper tools don't work.GrapheneOS has an alternative to it, apps just need to use it. So mostly banking apps and two government apps: https://grapheneos.org/articles/attestation-compatibility-guide

@shadowwwind @vkc Fortunately for me, I pretty much only want FOSS and/or true "no questions asked" freeware on my main phone. And then there's Amtrak: web site claims it is functioning. In July 2025 and this month I tried several browser and OS combos on the desktop and couldn't complete more than 2 searches. Had to install their APP on my work phone because I'm not logged into Google Play on my main phone.I need to get a third "Silly Con Valley things" phone.

@progo @vkc So far I've found 2 Problems on #GrapheneOS:1) Payments using NFC don't work.2) Android "Find my device" tags/devices cannot be registered, but the find function works fine.

@progo @shadowwwind @vkc You will get almost the same experience, but the operating system significantly improves your security, privacy, and control, even with invasive applications that you might install. In fact, the bar is set so high that it's truly night and day compared to the original operating system. You won't have access to the AI built into the operating system, which is a good thing, but Gemini works perfectly without invasive privileges, and GrapheneOS supports local AI.The community recommends that new users install Sandboxed Google Play, install all their applications in the default main profile, and then get on with their lives. You will have plenty of time to experiment with more exotic configurations such as private space and secondary profiles. Friction is the enemy when it comes to trying new things.Feel free to join us on our various communication channels. https://grapheneos.org/contact

@Xtreix @shadowwwind @vkc There are Android apps that refuse to install if they don't have access to the system addressbook or calendar or GPS. I'm pretty sure GrapheneOS gives the apps queryable null services if you deny the permission. This is better than refusing to run. Big points for GrapheneOS for this. (Not the only OS with this feature.)https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/3770-how-do-i-provide-a-fakeempty-adrs-book-to-whatsapp

@progo @shadowwwind @vkc Contact scope and Storage scope allow you to choose precisely which contacts and content (photos, videos, etc.) the application can access. The operating system makes the application believe that it has extended access when this is not the case. For example, I don't send MMS messages. I use Molly (a fork of Signal) via Accrescent as much as possible. The default SMS application asked me for access to photos every time I opened it. Using Storage scope, I gave it access to an empty folder and the problem was solved. There are plans to extend this functionality to the camera, location, microphone and other features.WhatsApp work without the GPS, If an application really needs GPS, you can choose to enable location services only when you are using the application.GrapheneOS uses its own network-based location service, which already allows for semi-offline location and will soon allow for completely offline location. I invite you to take a look at the Github issue tracker.

@progo if you don't need the Amtrak app for tickets, there are other routing apps. @bimba might work.

@shadowwwind @bimba thanks for the suggestion. My operation was: I already decided I'm taking Amtrak. I want to browse routes and order round trip tickets.Getting 403s after 2 searches with ANY desktop environment + browser is … well, I HATE the state of computing. My only other options if I didn't use the Android app would have been voice or text chat with an agent, or book through a third party for a higher price.Anyway I have my PDF tickets now.
