Itâs so joyousNo stupid gates to get onto the platformNo silly announcements telling me to label my luggage or not try to open the doors at the wrong time, and just a beeping to tell me the doors are closingSigns telling me what seats are reserved, so I can go find a nice window seat. And no compulsory reservationComfy seatsAnd it works properly with Interrail

And yes, this being DB and as Iâm going to Köln the chances of disruption are highBut the SYSTEM - in theory at least - is right

There goes a ICE to BerlinBut Iâm not taking that. Thatâs boring I have a little longer to wait for my more interesting option đ

Trainsplainers: yes I know thatâs a ICE 1. I know those are good and comfortable trains. But *today* I have my reasons for not taking it. That will become clear shortly đ1549 reasons actually.

If youâre in the Talgo end carriage - that has a proper bogie - do you get better ride quality than in the rest of it? đ€ Weâll seeFirst impression: itâs nicer than a Renfe 106

Ok, +30 departing Köln (missing timetable data đ€š)Now weâre going: itâs not terrible, but itâs not great eitherThe wheel noise is noticeably louder than in other ICEsAnd thereâs a loud air hissing noise every time the train brakes

At these lower speeds at least it doesnât have the vibrations of a Renfe 106, but the ride is rather jerky somehow. Not serene.

Overall this Talgo ICE L is not too badIf it were labelled IC rather than ICE it would be fineIt's not at the standard of other ICEs, but it is still a decent train. Good luggage space. Decent seats, decent amount of space. Solid wifi. Well designed toiletsYes, the ride is a bit jerky, the train a bit noisy. But I have been on far worse

Although given the other locomotive hauled option in the 230km/h class is a Siemens Railjet / Vectrain, and those trains are obviously better in almost every regard... you do I suppose wonder why DB went for this instead.

@jon *And* completely managed to forget about axle loads in NL, despite having meant to use these for DE <> NL as wellâŠ(Still canât get over the single-axle Jacobs thing. Feels like such a âI have a hammer! Therefore *that*âs a nail and *that*âs a nail and *that*âs a nail and [âŠ]â)

@happydisciple Indeed. Talgo's design *might* make sense if you need passive tilt or gauge changing. If you don't, it doesn't.

@jon I can entirely understand the attraction of only having to gauge-change a bit over a quarter of the axles compared to conventional bogies.(BRB, I foresee a passive tilting explainer rabbit hole)

@jon Talgoâs own material on https://www.talgo.com/en/technological-principles is entirely unsatisfactory. Lots of claim, no explanation whatsoever. My engineering BS sense is tingling.

@happydisciple It's also that in Talgo's design there is no real axle as such between the wheels, so that makes moving the wheels for variable gauge easier. And passive tilt works as you can connect the carriages at the top of the sort of wheel frame arrangement.

@jon The latter is true for any Jakobs bogie, no? Doesnât need to be a single-axle for that (plus more beneficial coupled-body dynamics at higher speeds, IIRC)

@happydisciple@mendeddrum.org @jon@gruene.social not really, the point is that the pivot point is above the center of mass, instead of below (as you'd get with basically any other system), so the tilt goes in the required direction. Image embeds are a bit broken on my instance for some reaso, but if you loom at https://rollingstockworld.com/passenger-cars/the-history-of-the-unique-talgo-trains-dynasty/ you can see how the main connection points to the wheels happens at the top of the carriage, together with the suspension.

đ€ The only high speed part of Köln-Berlin is Oebisfelde-Spandau where the line is rated for 250km/hThe Talgo ICE-L is doing just 160km/h here200km/h with the Vectron locomotive should be possible, so something is wrongAnd it is quite bumpy even at this speed... so what's it going to be like at 230km/h here, eventually?
