I mean this sincerely and with legit curiosity- I wonder how long the #forkiverse experiment will last once they realize the “like” button does nothing algorithmically. It’s like a doorbell that lights up but makes no sound. And that boost -the lifeblood of this place- only does slightly more when you have like 3 followers, while also spamming your own timelineIt’s just a really rough learning curve. IMHO fedi is only superficially like other social media, and I think that makes it robust and resistant to evil, but also isolationist and resistant to change. I’m curious what it will do with a coordinated influx like this

@aCoolLady one of the best things about Mastodon is that it's super hard to monetize it because of the no algorithm thing. So we don't get a lot of engagement trolls and that sort of influencer.

@EvilCartyen @aCoolLady yeah, I didn't get the sense that the #forkiverse folks are here for growth-hackery crap. Maybe some of them are, but I'd imagine that people who are into that stuff stay on X where they belong. There was a time when new users got here and left because their neighbor/favorite celebrity wasn't on Mastodon. The fediverse is still niche, but it's gotten a lot broader, and so has its retention. I'll be curious to see how many Fork-folks are here in a year. I bet it's a lot.

@csilverman @EvilCartyen @aCoolLady but organic attention growth is good. attention is limited. the more that people have it managed by the people they want to follow ala fedi, the less that it's hijacked by ads, algos and grifters anywhere.
