Spent the weekend setting up an old NUC to function as e.g. a media server at our house. Now I am looking for software to self-host a #digitalGarden type site on ubuntu. Any ideas?

@AuntNorma @KimCrayton1 @tanyakaroli @futurebird you should probably stop saying what you think, lady. Preferably you should stop thinking it too.

@futurebird They think of us like mindless little automatons who, if we don't find what we're looking for, will buy something else from the list of stuff they're showing us.Like, maybe some people work that way I guess. But when you're looking for something specific it's a real pain the ass.

@futurebird That's how I do it, never thought about it in that way though. But I never have something on as background, I am always actively choosing to watch or listen to something specific.I've always wondered how people can consume so much low quality content, but I guess they're not really paying attention? Makes sense.

@futurebird the open Web seems to be losing, though. Most people access content via a closed ecosystem like one of the many social media apps. But I hope people do move elsewhere, rediscover the purpose and the allure of the free Internet.

@futurebird no, I actually agree that this will happen. Personally I've had it with all ad-driven services, never again. And I don't need everyone to follow, I just needed My People - you people - to also feel that way and help make this a nice and informative space for those who want to leave the rotting carcasses of the big social media companies.Like, they can't go on like this can they? Surely they are in the process of failing. And when they do, many people will give up on the Internet. But we'll still be here, selfhosting, commenting, building quaint old blogs and whatnot.

@futurebird 461 kWh - which is above average for us, we're typically around 430 kWh. We're 5 people, each with screens and devices to power and so on.We have central heating using cooling water from the local power plant, and no gas.

@futurebird > People ask questions for reasons OTHER than simply obtaining information. A question can be a way to start a conversation. A way to try to find out if you are alone in your confusion. I feel like this part is obvious to most people, just not most techies - unfortunately.

@futurebird sure they were going to Bethlehem for a census, right? Because Joseph's family were from Bethlehem.

@pms @futurebird the romans had a general census in the entire realm every five years, though sometimes it was delayed for a year due to e.g. revolts or other events. These were tax censuses, and in some regions they counted members of tribes like in Judea, which meant that members of a tribe had to go to where the tribal center was to be counted. There were other more local censuses as well, but it's like there was a census around 2 or 1 BC.

@aCoolLady one of the best things about Mastodon is that it's super hard to monetize it because of the no algorithm thing. So we don't get a lot of engagement trolls and that sort of influencer.

@futurebird In Denmark we feel the US is trying to kick in an open door, the only thing I can think of RE mineral rights is that we probably have stricter environmental protection laws then the US.But overall it's no economical to mine in Greenland, the Greenland government has been desperate for investments for decades and yet there are no major mining operations in place.I think it's just because it would Look Cool to have a new territory added to the US.That said, the Greenlanders should decide who to associate with. They might dislike Denmark - and for mostly good reasons - but I doubt they're gonna look at their kin in Alaska and think "they look like they're having a great time!".
