I think the #forkiverse is proving that all we need for fedi to win is for people with reach (from writing for the NYT etc) to embrace it. It's great tech with great people, we just need more of them. We just need more people that other people want to follow. It's not difficult. #SocialWeb

@wjmaggos Yeah, this has been, quite frankly, heartbreaking to see. There are people and organizations with substantial following putting in the effort to make the fediverse more welcoming and diverse, and I am eternally grateful for that.Others, well, I think could've used their influence, and decided not to. Or gave up too easily.Oh well, no point in dwelling on that, I guess. Best be happy about every new opportunity.

@wjmaggos I feel that before one can handle many newcomers (in your timeline) one needs to find an ethically clean and technically functional way to introduce some form of algorithmic sorting that is easy to use for normal users and not prone to manipulation. I fear that issue hasn’t been solved yet. Big influencers in the Fediverse are not sufficient. I have a hard time following more, as I miss the ones who I care about (and yes, I could make lists etc, but most people won’t ).

@hfalcke I'm against algos generally, but especially ones we don't control. I don't think we can avoid them being manipulated. If people can't be bothered to make lists, they won't manage their algos either.I recommend thinking of your feed as a river. Follow lots of people, hopefully of varied views, and that you'll probably see the best posts cause lots of people you follow will boost it.But we could also have apps that also notify you every time certain people you choose post or boost.

Well, everything is an algorithm even a simple timeline is one. I’m thinking more of ways to filter and sort your messages. For example, I do value feeds from news sites, however, they tend to flood you with messages. Also, some people put a lot of information out while others, you do care about post relatively little. A “river algorithm” will always benefit those who post a lot of stuff - it is just statistics. Eventually, you need a smart way to look at your messages.

You can do some of this with lists and so, but it’s an extra hurdle and not so flexible. Also, an unfiltered stream could also become a mental burden because you may not want to miss the few gems among them. Yes, you can just let things flow by, but not everybody may be so relaxed about it.

@hfalcke I'd recommend unfollowing those who post too much. bet that the others we follow will boost their best posts.we could also build a way to show what posts got the most boosts from the people we follow. I imagine that we eventually have our article reader apps (and podcatchers and video players) connect to our social graph and not only queue what we've bookmarked, but also what's most popular with those we follow.eventually every article, podcast, video and song will be an AP item.
