Congratulations to our Indian colleagues who achieved their first soft landing on the moon. Only very few countries have achieved that and particularly not in recent times, where we saw lots of crash landings. They are first on the South Pole.I remember how we were proposing a European lunar lander South Pole Mission 15 years ago and seeing soft landing experiments at EADS. Europe didn’t pull it through. India did. #Moon #Chandrayaan3 #Astrodon

The reason why the South Pole is so interesting for lunar exploration is because you have peaks of (almost) eternal light where you have solar power most of the year and also direct communication to Earth. On the other hand there are craters in eternal darkness where water and other volatiles are preserved. You also have partially radio quiet zones nearby for radio astronomy experiments. Quite an interesting place for research therefore…https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/SMART-1/Experience_a_virtual_journey_to_the_lunar_Peak_of_Eternal_Light

Just for the fun of it, I googled the past. Found a wiki page to the old LIFE Lunar Infrastructure for Exploration study we conducted together with EADS, which was targeting the lunar South Pole https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_Infrastructure_for_ExplorationAnd the scientific workshop we organized then https://www.astron.nl/moon/

Tip for early career scientists: please don’t skip over your conclusions and end your talk with a “thank you” slide. We all know you are thankful, but we really would like to have a few moments while we go into discussions to go over your conclusions again.(BTW, If you really want to thank us, then say so, but it sounds hollow if you write it on a slide at home before you even have met us 🤷🏼‍♂️)#science #conference #astrodon #physics #astrophysics #EarlyCareerResearchers

I finally feel like a real professor. First time I bought my very own red pen (rather than using the one of my wife)! Tried it on 150 exams … (7 times more than what we had to do when we started the department @Radboud_uni 20 years ago …)

Our joint mobile #planetarium project in #Namibia just had its 15.000 th visitor after 2 years - most of them school kids. The second team of six local astro students from University of Naminbia #UNAM has been trained to take over some shows now. The ongoing passion of presenters and audience is truly inspiring. Looking forward to a new generation of explorers. #GoTeam #Africa #scicomm #AfricammTelescope #astronomy #astronomie @Radboud_uni

Do you want to know how predatory journals work? That’s how an astronomer suddenly comes on to the editorial board of a totally useless sports or aerospace journal…🤷🏼‍♂️ (of course, I won’t).

Learned this from US astronomers and corroborated in the article:The proposed budget cuts of ⅔ (6 Billion cut out of 9 Billion $) and intended firing of half of the workforce at the National Science Foundation really would mean a massacre of US #astronomy if even a part of these cuts are realized. Uncertainties & delays already seriously affect our ongoing international observing campaigns. I wouldn’t count on any US commitment in the near future. 🤔https://arstechnica.com/science/2025/02/white-house-budget-proposal-could-shatter-the-national-science-foundation/#Astrodon

I am looking for experts/#developers who are familiar with #ActivityPub and who might be willing to chat with me.I have started talking with parts of my network (mainly in D and NL), about how we could make the #Fediverse more interesting for content providers and main stream media. This also means attracting ordinary users to join and to find fair and simple ways to support content providers (without #paywalls).I have some ideas, but now need more expertise and a deeper look under the hood.

@Nonilex No, it is antisemists that are to blame. Netanyahu can be rightfully blamed for a loot of things, but it is not an excuse.

@wjmaggos I feel that before one can handle many newcomers (in your timeline) one needs to find an ethically clean and technically functional way to introduce some form of algorithmic sorting that is easy to use for normal users and not prone to manipulation. I fear that issue hasn’t been solved yet. Big influencers in the Fediverse are not sufficient. I have a hard time following more, as I miss the ones who I care about (and yes, I could make lists etc, but most people won’t ).

Well, everything is an algorithm even a simple timeline is one. I’m thinking more of ways to filter and sort your messages. For example, I do value feeds from news sites, however, they tend to flood you with messages. Also, some people put a lot of information out while others, you do care about post relatively little. A “river algorithm” will always benefit those who post a lot of stuff - it is just statistics. Eventually, you need a smart way to look at your messages.

You can do some of this with lists and so, but it’s an extra hurdle and not so flexible. Also, an unfiltered stream could also become a mental burden because you may not want to miss the few gems among them. Yes, you can just let things flow by, but not everybody may be so relaxed about it.
