It's a dark day in a series of dark days in the US. It feels weird posting about anything else, but Wednesday is our traditional call for questions post. Please add any if you've go them. I am catching up a bit after travel and will add the PQ's later this week.---Next #BikeNite is this Friday at 4pm Pacific standard time (UTC-8)This is our weekly call for questions. Reply with any you'd like me to add to the discussion on Friday. Please add the BikeNitePQ hashtag so it's easier to find a Proposed Question. (BikeNite is a Q&A type discussion on the Fediverse.) #BikeTooter cc @bikenite

@ascentale @bikenite Not counting e-assist (although refinements to e-assist design allowed), what cycling innovation has most affected you in the past 40 years (or less)? #BikeNite #BikeTooter #BikeNitePQ

@meganL @ascentale @bikenite Dropper post. Being able to quickly get seat low and out of the way has changed how I bike, whether it's mtb, fat bike, or gravel. Easier to put a foot down or even bail completely. Having the seat low helps get going when fat bike is on narrow packed trail or gravel bike has a heavy load.#BikeNite

@jerzone @meganL @ascentale @bikenite Good call. I was thinking the dropper too. Either that or tubeless setups.

@pete @meganL @ascentale @bikenite Good point, I tend to forget about tubeless, which is a good thing.

@jerzoneI bought new road and mountain bikes ~12 years ago after not riding for many years. The shifters on the road bike were a big change from the frame mounted levers from my youth. Suspension, disc brakes, tubeless and dropper posts were all significant changes from my ~2000 rigid Specialised Hardrock mountain bike.@pete @meganL @ascentale @bikenite

@SeanHawley @jerzone @pete @meganL @ascentale @bikenite Shifters on the downtube, as nature and God intended!

@ohesoHa haI'll take modern shifters any time. The road bike attitude to change amuses me. The resistance amongst pros to disc brakes was comical.@jerzone @pete @meganL @ascentale @bikenite

@SeanHawley @jerzone @pete @meganL @ascentale @bikenite Oh, I agree. I had downtube in the 70s-80s, didn't ride in the 90s up to about 2009, when it was a flatbar commuter. Got the gravel bike with Shimano 105 in 2018 and adjusted quickly, although I did catch myself reaching for the downtube on occasion.#BikeNite

@ohesoOne thing I miss from back in the day was that one of my bikes had brake lever extensions that ran parallel to the top of the bars, so you could ride with your hands on the top of the bars like a flat bar and grab the brake lever without moving your hand position.@jerzone @pete @meganL @ascentale @bikenite

@SeanHawley @jerzone @pete @meganL @ascentale @bikenite I had those, too, but mine were such rubbish it was worth your life to put any trust in them.

@oheso @SeanHawley @jerzone @meganL @ascentale @bikenite You can still get ‘crosstops’, as they’re called, for cable operated discs, and Shimano do hydro ones for GRX.Hope teased with a version for SRAM with their factory team years back, but they never got a full release for some reason.

@peteI just did a search and see that. The old version (suicide levers?) was much simpler.@oheso @jerzone @meganL @ascentale @bikenite

@oheso @SeanHawley @pete @jerzone @meganL @ascentale @bikenite so called because an emergency stop sometimes either bent the straight bar or caused the little end prong to lose its grip on the brake lever, resulting in no braking whatsoever! 😲

@oheso @SeanHawley @pete @jerzone @meganL @ascentale @bikenite ironically, suicide levers caused me to crash one final time many years after I stopped using them, when I rode a 1980s road bike for the first time in years. Turning into my lane at the end of the ride, I gave the non-existent suicides a squeeze to slow a bit, nothing happened, I overshot the turn and rode gently into a hedge. 😳🤣
