Living car free isn't easy. Or inexpensive. But run the numbers?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vizrn-R4PAE

@futurebird I have managed it for 5.5 years now, and you are right.

@louisffourie I've never owned a car and that is unlikely to change. I thought that I was saving maybe $400 a month... but it's probably more expensive to own a car now.

@futurebird Well I don't live in a city with great public transport, so I make use of a car coop when I really need a car.

@futurebird I probably could mostly manage it. The one car trip we typically make is our drive to Costco every few weeks, or weekend trips to a park or something. I've not checked how far our bus lines go, though. It might be possible. But when we already own a low mileage car that's all paid off, the only real expense is insurance and a fill every couple months.

@futurebird sold my last car in 2004 and never looked back. Have not run the numbers, but pretty sure they are impressive.

@futurebird @louisffourie 🤝 I officially become middle-aged next month and so far I've never needed to own a car. (I tried taking lessons, but cars don't get along with me). I've always been able to find places to live close to where I work, and now I'm in a situation where I can decline job offers. It costs several hundred euros just to be allowed to buy a car, then a used car is at leat €5000 before even getting into weekly expenses...

@futurebird I would like to live car free - and it would entail moving to a place with public transportation. On the other hand, it's a backup if I ever end up homeless.

@futurebird I got a 2019 Rav4 Hybrid in 2022. I really hope it lasts 20 years like our previous Civic did. One of the biggest issues with the old car was that it sat so low, all the headlights from the newer SUVs and giant trucks were blinding (getting older) and I needed to be up higher to avoid it. I did get a e-bike, but inertia is keeping the mileage on it low. Hopefully I can get into a rhythm and make that a replacement for four wheels. Although theft on short trips is a concern.
