@futurebird I probably could mostly manage it. The one car trip we typically make is our drive to Costco every few weeks, or weekend trips to a park or something. I've not checked how far our bus lines go, though. It might be possible. But when we already own a low mileage car that's all paid off, the only real expense is insurance and a fill every couple months.

Here's to all the open source developers who put hours and hours of their lives into a project they built, put it out into the world, and now it sits with approximately zero users.Thank you for putting labor into the world to try and help others, even if it's never been recognized.Brag about your project here if you'd like!

Seriously I'm very tired of people outside the US screaming at us to "do more" and "protest harder", and "general strike". Hundreds of thousands ARE protesting. Sometimes millions. And getting shot with rubber bullets AND real bullets. Gassed. Beaten. Arrested. It's a big fucking country. Texas ALONE is bigger than France.

Not gonna lie, I quietly am a little bit judgmental towards people who take vacations to places I can't go (for simple pleasure trips not family/friends/business).

I mean I still will be friends with them or whatever, but it does give me a bit of ugh when I hear where they went that I just am not safe to go.

Today I learned about a particularly vile piece of shit corp, Bright Data. Web scraping as a service. They boast about having 150 million IP addresses from residential IPs and "real user devices" (I can't imagine that it's with the user's consent) and being able to scrape petabytes. They brag about their ability to defeat captchas, turning websites into AI data. Like every possible gross thing you can think of all wrapped up in a package with a shiny website bow.

When some company demands security questionnaires be filled out for the open source product they don't pay for. And I leave it to others to politely say "sorry we don't fill those out unless you pay" because I'd just say "fuck off".

@munin What do you mean random open source project maintained by a single person and who has in total received $75 in donations in the last 5 years doesn't have a SOC2?

@dr_a @munin my biases are showing, but I see even more of that sort of thing come out of compliance. Only some of which is compliance 's fault themselves. Sometimes it's the upstream auditors and regulators that are also driving this shit.

You know, at this point, can we just have Skynet run things? It'd probably be less bad than whatever this bullshit is.

@futurebird I keep thinking about applying for the DC Metro, but they're 100% in office and I don't know if I can go back to that...

I do appreciate all the work the EU has done with regulatory work around data sovereignty and the DMA. But they would still be gigafucked if the US ordered Amazon, Google, and Microsoft to cut them off. They may not even have the encryption keys accessible entirely in the EU. The fact that their data physically resides in Europe don't mean shit if a US corp can kill their whole infrastructure with a single command to lock their accounts.

And even if they are running EU clouds - if the US CDNs cut them off, or black hole their DNS, or ...Basically, the US internet could recover from severing international connections. Every other country would just be fucked.

@futurebird I could MAYBE see an argument to be made if it was a financial question - is it worth going 6 figures into debt to get a piece of paper you never use? But that's going to be very person specific based upon what their dreams and aspirations are. And it'd still be best to keep some sort of plan B around, be it a trade or a 2 year degree or something.
