“if you’re listening, God, please don’t make it hard to know if we should believe the things that we seeshould we run away? Should we try and stay? or would it just be better just to let things be?”this line from Dorothy‘s headline song “home” from the Wiz never really resonated with me … until recently no, I think about it all the time #thewiz #oz

I also enjoy that Charlie Smalls has rhymed the word "God" with "hard"Which works (just) if you have the right NYC accent... but not otherwise.

Stephanie Mills is from Brooklyn but doesn't make it rhyme. Maybe it's too old school for her. Or maybe she was just in a pit of despair because she's singing a song that Ross ... defined. She is excellent... But listen I would never want to try to be a follow up act to Diana Ross. Just cry and go home. https://youtu.be/cnKQN7TF4hQ?list=RDcnKQN7TF4hQ&t=154

@catmisgivings That's what people from California think NYC sounds like. The worst fake NYC accent is that one that Meowth has. I have never heard ANYONE who sound like that in my life. IDK maybe that's how Pica sounds but she pretends she can't talk around humans.

@catmisgivings Adding it to my head cannon that ALL cats have a terrible fake NYC accent. That's just how it works.

@flipper @catmisgivings I have a spreadsheet of accents that catch my ear for being "natural" but distinctive. Minor obsession.

@catmisgivings @AnachronistJohn One of the slippery things about accents is they are always changing. We tend to have a fixed idea of accents tied to a place, but that fixed idea might only apply to the older people from that region. This video is really neat to show the change... which is still going ... everywhere. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=842OX2_vCic

@futurebird @catmisgivings @AnachronistJohn There's a chapter of Ulysses that does this! I had to skim until I'd gotten about 2/3 of the way through. I've read a lot of Shakespeare, but not (untranslated) Chaucer.

@futurebird My 2 year old seems to be developing a bit of a New York accent and we have no idea where it comes from since neither of us has it and her teachers at daycare don't have it either.Must be something in the water.

@futurebird @catmisgivings The (I think NYC) accent that really surprised me, when I heard him for the first time, was Isaac Asimov. I just hadn't expected him to sound like a cabbie from some film.

@darkling @catmisgivings I like the way both of them say "robits" ... this seems to be going away. But it was common in US English a generation ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvMZxNmWoko

@futurebird @catmisgivings I’ve always loved maps of dialects in the US, especially because NYC has so many different ones, probably more than any state.

@nazokiyoubinbou @darkling @catmisgivings I wonder if it was a product of the clipped high diction of "radio voice" where everything was said with a kind of clarity that was meant to overcome static?

@futurebird @catmisgivings @AnachronistJohn I love the West Country Yap videos this channel posts. Reminds me of my childhood. You still hear these voices down that way now, especially strong if there are grockles in the pub.https://youtube.com/watch?v=WjTIFkWJctY&start=240
