As the clamour for the UK to (re)join the EU Customs Union (the head of the TUC is the latest to raise their voice), its worth re-iterating this is not a subscription service where we can just choose to sign-up & get the benefits. To (re)join requires negotiations between a Govt. that continues to be worried about the views of Brexiters and an EU that remains suspicious of the UK political class & is unwilling to offer much in the way of compromise to get a 'deal' done.#EU #UK #Brexit

@ChrisMayLA6 The UK needs to realise that the EU will never simply offer it a buffet to choose from what it likes. A customs union for goods and services is inextricably linked with freedom to travel. You can't have one without the other. And I hope that one of the non negotiable preconditions for a customs union will be the UK joining Schengen so we, here in Ireland, can finally do the same.

@rozeboosje @ChrisMayLA6 Not at all. It only comes down to the UK offering the EU something it needs. Then things will change quickly. If the UK offers the EU something which the EU can produce internally, then naturally the EU will be a tough customer. This is just common business sense.

@h4890 @ChrisMayLA6 There is nothing the UK can offer that:1. The EU cannot provide itself2. The EU cannot source elsewhere3. The EU needs so desperately that it is willing to compromise its core principles overIn fact, the UK has precious little to offer in natural resources, period. Precious little in human talent, too. Especially if it shrinks all the way back to Little England.

@h4890 @rozeboosje I don't disagree, but that realisation has not reached the UK political class who still think the UK is a prized catch without having to offer anything special....

@rozeboosje @ChrisMayLA6 Don't be so negative! I would imagine the UK can offer:* Oil and gas. * Finance (if taxes come down and laws are changed)* Whisky* Sheep * Airplane technology* Cars* Fashion * Marmelade * ShortbreadAnd most likely many more things.
