@mastodonmigration I like Mastodon but I repeatedly see posts about people trying it and feeling unwelcome here or put off the platform. For example a big user I follow @GottaLaff essentially left for Bluesky. I know the decentralized nature of picking a server is odd for many normie’s but I don’t think that’s a big issue. What can Mastodon do to be more attractive?

@vpz @mastodonmigration @GottaLaff Can you restate your concerns in terms of specific hosts (servers) please? A safe space and community on Mastodon relies on different servers having different user ban policies, and even more than that, different banned server policies that they network to.

@ckent @vpz @mastodonmigration @GottaLaff imo have any rules you want on your server but blocking other servers for less than unpoliced harassment stemming from their servers, will mean users have no idea if they can actually follow the people they want to on another server from the server they are choosing. or maybe it works now but won't in a week.with protection from unwanted tagging and no algos, you won't see stuff that isn't boosted by people you follow. as safe as browsing the web.

@vpz @mastodonmigration @GottaLaff For example, the rule of thumb I used in 2022 was to see if the Blocked Servers list banned racists and anti-trans hosts

@wjmaggos @vpz @mastodonmigration @GottaLaff this isn’t the sort downside that is unsustainable — “as safe as browsing the web” is an improvement I would’ve expected a pushback along the lines of popularity, adoption and addiction. For that there’s already progress in the general drop in social media use, and an opportunity around people asking for a detox.
