Wow, there aren't a lot of flatbed scanners made any more, or I can't find them (and "shit I can buy" is usually and easy search).Looking for a "book" scanner, where the scanner surface is close to the edge so a book easily hangs over, the only one I've found is the Plustek OpticBook 3800L.Anyone heard of "Plustek"? $300 or so.Not many flatbed scanners of any kind!

@tomjennings I've used the Plustek A300 quite a bit. I'm not sure about the newer models, but the A300s work fine. The software has a Windows 98 flavor, but the actual device works fine. Windows only, though maybe someone can get it working in Linux.

@lymenzies Thanks, good to know. As luck (I hope it is) has it, Staples lists then for $109 -- got to be an error, but hey -- so obviously I instantly bought it, for pickup at a nearby store. If it ends up being a line cord or accessory wrong listed I'll find out at pickup and do a return. Or I'll get a foolishly good deal. I'll be using on linux so we'll see.

@syllopsium Other than amazon I don't see any I can afford. The old style will work well with the other old hand drawn stuff I have. I'm not looking at Amazon, too much junk there.

@lymenzies Thanks, good to know Plustek is real. Not a popular product category any more!

@tomjennings For what it’s worth, I’m happy with my Plustek film scanner.

@tomjennings Flatbed scanners have been largely supplanted by multipurpose printer/scanner/copiers, seems like.

@tomjennings What are you planning to run it on? I have an old HP Scanjet 4670 that might fit the bill, but I think the software might be a challenge.

@tomjennings The only drivers I can find online are for PowerPC MacOS and XP/Vista. If you want to give it a run, I’m happy to send it to you to partially make up for annoying the crap out of you in the 80s.

@jlundell scanners have kinda disappeared as functions. Flatbeds were mainly cheap, but they have many advantages over cameras. Fox and correct focus. Glass to hold wrinkled flat. Zero glare issues. That 3800L has the glass 6mm from the edge so it doesn't crack hardcover book spines, and most of what I want to scan are ancient, back to 1840.

@timoj Lol! Haha no worries! Oh you don't know what trouble was! Asking earnest questions over and over was hardly annoying. Ok maybe occasionally exasperating, but in the long term? It is literally all good. Thanks but I think I'm gonna get the 3800L they has the 6mm edge thing for books. And modern speed USB!

@tomjennings It may be because they are integrated now. I use a HP 3830, and the Linux drivers work fine.

@oberono Yes, the all-in-one phenom. It really is the right solution for most.
