Ok, so after following the instructions to install the MATE desktop, FreeBSD is working well. Firefox runs fine. The console has a reasonable font size using the framebuffer/drm. The whole computer is actually quite fast, but it should be on a core-i3 with 8GB.

It used the be a rite of passage, but what are your current opinions on compiling a custom #linux kernel? Is it ever worth the trouble on a semi-recent x64 PC?

@Toxic_Flange Depends on what you mean by modern day CPU. A lot of ARM chips have XIP mode and ram on die.Or are you talking about x86_64 only?

@Toxic_Flange I don't know anything about this subject, but it looks like this was once a feature of CoreBoot but required a proprietary blob. https://www.phoronix.com/news/Coreboot-FSP-T-Not-NeededThe keyword to look for is cache-as-ram.

@tomjennings I've used the Plustek A300 quite a bit. I'm not sure about the newer models, but the A300s work fine. The software has a Windows 98 flavor, but the actual device works fine. Windows only, though maybe someone can get it working in Linux.
