@Suiseiseki I'm considering getting a KGPE-D16, but I remembered you said something regarding occasional boot failures, and a certain noctua fan mod. Do you happen to know what I'm talking about?

@freebeer The RAMinit isn't finished and thus out of 100 boots, typically it fails once or twice. At a very specific room temperature - seemingly within 0.5°C, RAMinit will fail every time - but you just wait a bit and then RAMinit works again - but I wouldn't expect you to run into that problem.I use modded Deep Cool AK400's which works fine, but you need a metal saw, drills and something to remove the burrs (a grinder or a file) to do that.Old G34 Nocuta fans are available, which don't require modification, but those are expensive and hard to find.

@Suiseiseki Another thing on my mind is the GPU. You seem to recommend GTX 780Ti, but isn't Titan Z just as decent freedom-wise?

@freebeer I haven't tested the Titan Z and I'm not sure if any Nouveau developer has tested it either. It has 2 GPUs, but the clocking is slightly lower than the 780 Ti - I suspect that if it works with Nouveau, it will only use 1 GPU.I recommend adding to; GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nouveau.config=NvPmEnableGating=1 nouveau.config=NvBoost=2"Power gating reduces idle power consumption, but induces bugs.Setting NvBoost=2 increases clocking past idle to maximum defined by the VBIOS - so pretty much an overclock (note that all Nouveau does is increase fanspeed to 100% - it will not downclock on overheating - so watch the temps when using that setting - but you really won't see overheating, as no free software program can saturate such GPU yet and there is a VBIOS failsafe that will cut the power at a set overheating point).Clock up to performance mode;echo 0f | sudo tee -a /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/pstateClock back down to idle;echo 0a | sudo tee -a /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/pstate

@freebeer Also, gnuboot doesn't execute proprietary VBIOS's unless you use the seabios image and the ASPEED GPU breaks video output due to how it doesn't support EDID.What you do is get boot working with VGA ASPEED, then set the VGA disable header and then plug in the GPU. You won't be able to visually see GRUB, but as soon as the nouveau driver loads, you'll get an output.

@freebeer Ah yeah, I forgot, the full config should be; GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nohz=on nouveau.config=NvPmEnableGating=1 nouveau.config=NvBoost=2 mitigations=off net.ifnames=0 rd.luks.uuid=<LUKS partition UUID> rd.luks.allow-discards«only if using SSD» root=UUID=«root partition in LUKS partition UUID» rootfstype=ext4 rootflags=rw,noatime video=DP-1:2560x1440@120"nohz=on allows the CPU to enter CC6 on idle, meaning each CPU idles at only ~50W.net.ifnames=0 enables actually predictable network interface names.video=DP-1:2560x1440@120 is needed if you have a high clocking 1440p screen, as otherwise Linux tries to set the video mode to 2560x1440@144 or 2560x1440@165 which does not work most 780 Ti's and I figure Titan Z's too have a VBIOS has a display clock limit that tops out at 120Hz.
