@earthling People often speak of “Linux distributions,” but this is a misnomer. What they are referring to are actually GNU operating systems that use Linux, the kernel — properly called GNU/Linux systems. Linux is just a kernel, and the larger system owes its functionality and freedom to the GNU Project, which was started to create a complete free software operating system. However, Linux, the kernel as it is commonly distributed today contains numerous nonfree components (proprietary blobs) which deny users their freedom. In this state, Linux is not a free program; it is no better, from an ethical standpoint, than Windows or macOS. To suggest that systems based on such a kernel are “more free” is misleading, as they all impose similar unjust restrictions on the users.Fortunately, we have a fully free version of the kernel: Linux-libre. This version removes all the nonfree blobs, transforming Linux into a kernel that respects your freedom. There are complete GNU/Linux-libre systems, such as Parabola GNU/Linux-libre, which can be installed easily by new users and offer them a fully free computing environment. However, be careful: some versions of these systems include systemd, which in itself is proprietary software, so avoid these for true freedom.

@freetar @sally @Suiseiseki @SuperDicq @dushman I would be more bothered with the proprietary winblows key, as that thing is harder to remove.

@verita84 @freetar It wasn't paniful for me, I just disabled its addons and replaced them with uBlock Origin (hard mode + disabled JS), and LibRedirect. You could also disable its privacy protection features from "IceCat Settings" tab but I advise against that.

@Suiseiseki @verita84 I'm curious in learning about the process of removing Rust-dependent code from GNU Linux-libre, but so far, I've only come across a limited set of patches and not much else.

Leah Rowe has once again proven to be a proprietary plant, this time by pushing yet another "freedom-friendly" project that sneakily depends on proprietary garbage to even boot. Bravo — truly a masterclass in misleading the unsuspecting public into thinking they're buying liberation, when in fact they're just getting shackled with blobs. After releasing their awful coreboot spin and slapping a misleading label on it to trick people into believing it’s somehow better than the now tragically blob-infested "Libreboot," Rowe has doubled down — now adding support for Sandy, Ivy Bridge, and Haswell platforms. You know, the ones that require proprietary firmware to function and absolutely cannot get FSF’s Respects Your Freedom certification — but hey, who needs honesty when you can just say "freedom" a bunch of times and hope no one reads the fine print?Of course, no clear warnings for newcomers, no disclaimers, just a cheerful "look, it boots!" as if that’s the only freedom that matters. So now people will waste money on machines that cannot respect their freedom by design.Fortunately, we still have GNU Boot — the real deal, no blobs, no corporate compromise, no weaselly support for platforms that spit in the face of user freedom. Just pure, uncompromising Free Software, the way Saint IGNUcius intended.Ref: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/fsdg-compliant-sandyivybridgehaswell-support-added-canoeboot

The volunteers of the free software community have done a commendable and vital job in helping me liberate my medical needs from the subjugation of proprietary software. The proprietary pharmaceutical companies seek to impose unjust restrictions upon patients: they expect me to carry a restricted, proprietary handheld device to monitor my glucose, or to install their application which demands a non-free, recent version of Android alongside proprietary Google dis-services.Worse, this software implements treacherous computing, features designed to ensure the user cannot modify the system and have root privileges, thereby denying the user control over their own computer. They also mandate an online account, forcing the user to transmit private medical readings to a central server, subjecting the patient to surveillance. The community said "No" to this mistreatment. Thus, free software solutions like Nightscout and xDrip+ were born. I can now monitor my glucose levels using Replicant, a fully free operating system, and I can reset the clock of my sensor, exercising my right to tinker and use the sensor beyond the mandated 14 days limit, all thanks to the tireless work of these developers. While I am aware that the Galaxy S3 still relies on non-free firmware for some hardware initialization, I am confident we are moving toward a future where we have a fully free phone. We must continue this fight so that people can live in freedom, rather than being literally physically attached to proprietary software that controls them.

@squid64 The OpenRC version of Parabola GNU/Linux-libre is quite unmaintained. According to IRC logs, the developers merely put it as a choice, but don't expect you to actually use it. I had bricked my Parabola GNU/Linux-libre install once due to an incompatible update and had to fetch a fix from Artix GNU/Linux repository offline, and Parabola GNU/Linux-libre's developers didn't push an update until 2 weeks later.

@SuperDicq GNU Linux-libre, the kernel, on Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre just works without any issues yet it's fairly minimal. Software could be perfected but most users don't call out the devs for it and accept the situation as is.

@Suiseiseki I'm considering getting a KGPE-D16, but I remembered you said something regarding occasional boot failures, and a certain noctua fan mod. Do you happen to know what I'm talking about?

@Suiseiseki Another thing on my mind is the GPU. You seem to recommend GTX 780Ti, but isn't Titan Z just as decent freedom-wise?

Part of me likes to hold senior (computing) positions wherever I work a tiny job so that I force freedom-respecting (and more efficient) choices upon them. I somehow managed to break my way into such positions and convince them every time :cirnoHi:
