@p @graf I'm sorry to bug you guys but do you know how to use Fiefox inspect mode to remove a highlighted section of a PDF document?I'm told this is possible but I'm lost in the digital weeds here.I can't offer to give you much in return except all the love in the world of course.

@Terry@poa.st @p@fsebugoutzone.org @graf@poa.st I checked it. You can't do it on this one. The glowies correctly censored thisOn Firefox inspect mode a pdf page has 2 parts:the canvasWrapper that is basically an image and the invisible textLayer that contains the text you can selectIf you can't select it you can't reveal it

@Terry@poa.st @graf@poa.st @p@fsebugoutzone.org I think the feds extract the pages from the original pdf as images. Then erase parts of the images. Then assemble the censored pdf and run OCR to add the text.I don't think these pdfs contain any information about the censored contentBut maybe if someone knows how the pdf format really works then they can check it if there is some hidden content

@reimu @graf @p on some of the documents earlier you could copy and paste it into notepad and the redactions showed up. This was first discovered about 12 hours ago and I think since then they fixed the glitch.

@Terry @reimu @graf @p When they use Acrobat to block out sections the file has to be resaved and/or the layers "flattened" to actually remove the text. The easier thing to do after such edits is to just click "save" and those are the cases where the text is still retrievable.

@Terry@poa.st @graf@poa.st @p@fsebugoutzone.org I checked the pdf with poppler-utils it contains absolutely nothing other then the censored images and the selectable text. No metadata, no custom properties, no hidden images and no embedded files.Today I learned that you can embed random files into a pdf and pdf viewers/editors don't show it. Someone in the future will probably find a way to abuse this

@Terry @graf I don't think it's very straightforward to to this with a browser. Presumably the redactions are graphical elements and the text is text, it's probably easy to extract the text. There are a lot of text extraction tools for PDFs; I haven't looked at any of this stuff yet. You could attach a PDF and I could fiddle with it.

@reimu @graf @Terry > I think the feds extract the pages from the original pdf as images. Then erase parts of the images. Then assemble the censored pdf and run OCR to add the text.Yeah, Ashcroft got in trouble for this sort of thing a few times during Iraq, it's an old issue that periodically crops up; I wonder if they do that sort of thing intentionally sometimes. People are talking about it being *possible* to do this but they're not talking about anything particularly revelatory: same with the Ashcroft docs. So maybe they're trying to keep people busy, or maybe like that one aviation company that got the black highlighter removed, right, it's a plausibly deniable burn, a selective accidental leak. Like, either the Epstein shit is a nothingburger and they let the dinguses handle the redactions, or the Epstein shit is a CIA somethingburger and there are unlikely to be any real accidents but there will be things that *look* like accidents.> But maybe if someone knows how the pdf format really worksSame as almost any typesetting document format. Adobe's accumulated cruft, of course. And they give you the editor and the editor is designed to be WYSIWYG (because PDFs arrived when wizzy-wig was a buzzword and we were all gonna have multimedia virtual reality) so you have text and you tell it "draw a black box over this text" and the document now has text with a black box over it. There's also OCR metadata if it was physical and then scanned, like those image tools that cropped but left full-size thumbnails in the metadata.Actually probably @ins0mniak would probably have a decent rant about the offices full of incompetent dinguses that sit there and do the mass scanning of documents.

@Terry @reimu @graf > and I think since then they fixed the glitchThis is why you download first, then post the original documents to mirror them publicly, and then try to figure out what's in them. Some people will have some of the originals but if they didn't post them ASAP, they could have shoved whatever inside them. Download all of it now (and don't use a Windows computer or the official Adobe if you can avoid it, for God's sake) and then worry about analyzing it. If you *have* it then they can't stop you from analyzing it, but if you analyze instead of copying, then they can stop you from downloading it. Pickpockets don't stand next to you to count the money in your wallet, they bolt the fuck out and then count it.

Someone in the future will probably find a way to abuse thisEvery issue of PoC||GTFO is also a zip file containing code and supplemental documents. The first several issues actually included the *prior* issues, so you downloaded #4, it had #3 embedded, which had #2 embedded, like a Russian doll. Some of them are also bootloaders, one issue embeds its own md5sum.https://github.com/angea/pocorgtfo

@p @Terry @graf @reimu When folks brought this to my attention, I was able to adjust the old file in acrobat x pro. Nothing insane in what I saw TBO. Mostly dates and cash amounts blacked out. One thing... the levels of stupidity and retardation required to release non-merged, non-locked PDF files stretches credibility. If they are truly this inept, our government is fractal levels of completely fucked.

@p @Terry @graf Jesus...So normally, when you are redacting information PROPERLY, you will:1: Select the material to be redacted with the redact text and Images tool. 2: Save the non-applied version of the redacted document somewhere secure in case you need to make edits. (You WILL have to make edits, the fuckers having your redact it will ALWAYS have you make edits).3: You then press the APPLY REDACTIONS button that pops up in the corner/top/sidebar of Acrobat Pro. This changes the selected object(s) from an embedded image or font into black vector based trash or a raster image, depending on how old your Acrobat is.4: You then select "Sanitize" under the "Redact a document" section in the sidebar. This pulls out lots of innate windows file tracking - basically it blows up the meta data hidden in the body and the trailer of the file. 5: Set a password on the document locking out EVERY OPTION except reading and printing. 256 characters. Trash-word, use a generator, then forget it. You don't care about keeping track of it, you'll be regenerating from your saved document if necessary. They should not even be able to cut-and-paste. (There are apps to break into this security, but its destructive to the content, and forensically very obvious that it was carried out). This is how I did it in a previous life. You can probably guess what step the morons missed.
