@gabrielesvelto Not a bad motherboard if it could be GNUbooted.

@gabrielesvelto yeah, I need context. What is that thing? What would drive the need for that many serial ports?

@gabrielesvelto found something suggesting it might be for a bot farm: https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/motherboards/custom-intel-motherboards-with-a-whopping-36-usb-ports-spotted-online-extravagant-connectivity-offering-fuels-bot-farm-speculation

@gabrielesvelto When I was using a peripheral like this it was some third party brand attached to a Sparc. The purpose was to get lots of serial delivered Wall St feeds, the business wrote software to normalize APIs from different sources. But I am always up for a weird motherboard picture

@mxk @mhoye I wonder why don't they do that over WiFi? ADB has supported running over WiFi for ages now and you're not limited by the number of devices that can hang off a single hub.

@gabrielesveltoI assume USB is easier to set up: Just plug in the cable and you are done. (Depending on the settings you would have to confirm the connection, but that's easier than typing in a wifi password)WiFi also has potential throughput issues if you have hundreds of devices near each other.@mxk @mhoye

@the_moep @mxk @mhoye idk, USB with lots of fan-out is terrible for bandwidth and ADB access via WiFi can be scripted. One reason I can think of to use USB is if you also needed fastboot - for example to re-image the phone - and that cannot be done over WiFi AFAIK.

@gabrielesveltoI'd imagine this mobo has multiple USB controllers to deal with fanout issues. One per port would be ideal, but it could also be 1 per 4 ports, if they don't plan to use external hubs.@the_moep @mxk @mhoye

@gabrielesvelto If those are just connected by hub, it's not too interesting. But if they actually have like 10+ XHCI's... Where do I send the check?

@azonenberg @gabrielesvelto I don't think the click farms need that much bandwidth. I wonder if the USB ports are actually just blue USB 2.0 ports.

@anymouse_404They tend to run into the per-controller endpoint limit tho@azonenberg @gabrielesvelto

@wolf480pl yes, someone pointed to the specs and it has several different controllers with dedicated power rails for all the ports
