Real question for anyone who knows (like a researcher): are people actually worse at handling their feelings and impulses now, or does it just seem that way?#research #socialScience #psychology #AskFedi

@keira_reckonsI don't want to discourage you asking such a legitimate question. however, I could show you studies that sufficiently proof that attention spans from 1960 to 2000 actually increased (Protzko, Marshmallow Test). conversely, I could show increased inattention due to mobile devices or nutrition ("inattention in adolescents was significantly associated with MP ownership" Zheng, Ghao et al Association between mobile phone use and inattention in 7102 Chinese adolescents: a population-based cross-sectional study).with sufficient digging I could also sufficiently show that neither is true. I could also make up a study that shows that adults today have much worse delayed gratification ability than teenagers :aurashrug:

@kaia @keira_reckons or you could ask any educator how things have changed over the last decade, and they'll happily tell you (it's not good)

@moth_ball @keira_reckons true, but at any point in time this was a point of discussion. that the author's generation was the last educated one and that newspapers or the invention of radio destroyed that generation's brains. but I agree that it does not look good :KalWorry:

@kaia yeah, data supports everything, huh? Ah well. If only there were answers available! (Nothing would change, but I'd know, and not just wonder :))

@keira_reckons > If only there were answers available! (Nothing would change, but I'd know, and not just wonder :))If these sorts of questions really intrigue you, maybe consider taking some 101 papers in subjects like anthropology, social psychology, sociology, or critical media studies.I bombed out of uni after completing only one 200 level paper, but I still had heaps of curiosity itches scratched by the various 100 level papers I did. No regrets. Would go again.@kaia
