The Software Industry is one big hoax. In a world of Free Software and shared, verified knowledge, the common platform of civilization would be so vast, that there would be little need for customization to fit specific use cases. Selling software would not be a thing.Capitalism sells you 10,000 types of mouse traps, none of which work very well, to sustain illusions of innovation rewarded, of consumer choice, of the American Dream.#FreeSoftware #Software #Capitalism #GNU

@purrperl GNU was originally supposed to give us a free OS and free dev toolsMission accomplished, many years ago.We also have free network services. We do not have good free end user tools. This is mainly because devs are wired differently from most users and write code for other devs. For example, commercial software keeps trying to hide the file concept, while all FOSS requires you to understand files.

@mike805 Please tell me about which commercial software tries to hide the file concept.I am working on a Debian-based, GNOME-first GNU/Linux distro, that will bring macOS levels of aesthetics and UX friendliness to the GNU/Linux world. Friendly both to devs and to end users, so FOSS gains large scale adoption, and displaces commercial software. Here are some general design ideas for it ( at the end of this article ):https://rant.li/ashwin/apple

@purrperl iTunes was the first offender. It would happily grab your existing collection, even searching for it. But within iTunes itself, you had to click a detail page to see the location of the music file.Google Docs indexes by recently opened or gives you a search prompt. It doesn't default to a files and directories view.MS Office is going to "everything in the cloud" as fast as they can get away with.None of these things make it easy to store your data locally.

@amerika @purrperl Nah, I went from Office 2003 right to Open/Libre Office. Took one look at the new UI, looked for the back-to-old option, found there wasn't one, and did not proceed.
