@ElDeadKennedy I see why it exists, but I can't setup my dad with some box and some display just for it.

@kaia@brotka.st @ElDeadKennedy@shitposter.world I agree.I own this camera: https://aliexpress.com/item/1005007928098161.htmlIt's a very simple camera that uses only USB, it also IR vision so it does not need a light or motion sensor, it can perfectly record everything in the dark. I have it connected to a SBC that runs ZoneMinder, much more practical than analog tapes.

@kaia@brotka.st @ElDeadKennedy@shitposter.world If you don't want to use proprietary servers, setting up your own server is the only other option. ZoneMinder is pretty easy to use and install tho.

@kaia AFAIK they don't have lights, but Unifi cameras are a pretty good balance of privacy vs not needing a whole homelab to run your cameras. The cloud features are optional and can be turned off, and there's no subscription. It's also more expensive than your Chinese camera du jour, since at minimum you need a camera and a CloudKey to act as the NVR.After the initial setup, you basically just need to open the app to see the cameras. Wife is a technophobe and had no problems with it.

@kaia Ubiquiti is the prosumer gold standard, but you need the NVR to go with it If you just want an app and it records to SD card, Hikvision and Reolink are able to operate completely offline and will record to SD card, but they also have an app that works over LAN and does not require the cloud. Both brands cameras also have a web interface for management and expose an RTSP stream you can do pretty much anything with
