@prettygood You can selfhost it and avoid the ads with a device called vee-see-are.

@kaia AFAIK they don't have lights, but Unifi cameras are a pretty good balance of privacy vs not needing a whole homelab to run your cameras. The cloud features are optional and can be turned off, and there's no subscription. It's also more expensive than your Chinese camera du jour, since at minimum you need a camera and a CloudKey to act as the NVR.After the initial setup, you basically just need to open the app to see the cameras. Wife is a technophobe and had no problems with it.

@kaia We have a similar situation in Brazil, but with the voltage instead: parts of the country are 110V, parts are 220V, and some have both, but everything everywhere is 60Hz.

@rosey 8.1 was pretty good (for Windows) once you restored the classic start menu and disabled fast startup.

"Never say never" and all that, but I don't ever see myself using an immutable distro. My computer is a living, breathing thing, and I've learned a great deal of what I know by manually fixing the problems that immutability claims to address. I don't like the idea of my PC being an appliance.

@rosey Since they released the new app (which also works with the old watches) I've been exclusively back on my old Pebble Time. I also had a TicWatch and the Pixel watches 1 and 2, and honestly the Pebble still beats all of them in user experience and battery life. I'm looking forward to the Time 2.

The other day I saw a post mentioning that the reason why management and C-level clowns are so impressed by AI is because their usual tasks are the ones that most align with what LLMs are good at: coming up with a bunch of bullshit that wastes other people's time. That thought has been ringing like an air raid siren in my head ever since.

@noyoushutthefuckupdad It's the average "power of friendship" / "I'm about to die so I'll use my super secret power to turn things around" kinda shounen. It has a million characters, some of which are actually interesting and have a lot of potential, but the story is very weak and gets boring really fast.
