What would happen if for *one day* you attempted to pay for all of the media you enjoyed. This would mean for each video you watched you'd try to find who really made it and pay what you thought it was worth in an ideal world? For each article you'd find the author. etc. Most media I enjoy is created by people who share it "for free" mediated by some service that attempts to add advertising. Only a tiny fraction is "big media" -- and this is more common than ever I think.

I think it might be possible to invert the structure of media from "one to many" into "many to many" but I also think this isn't something that could happen naturally. It'd take a radical shift in values.

When I examine my "media environment" in this way I sometimes find there are things I spend time watching that don't really offer much. If content isn't worth supporting is it even worth watching?Sometimes you just want something to listen to in the background or to fall asleep, but I've been doing this less and less. I think it has a slow, but building positive impact on my mental health.

@futurebird imagine that we're able to put $20 in a virtual tip jar in our banking app. as we consume open access media throughout the month, we tracked ourselves in good FOSS apps and at the end, that money got divided up based on percentage of time and directly transferred to creators' banks.over time, more media would be made available this way. eventually, this replaces Netflix and Spotify etc. we pay the same but executives no longer take a piece. ads get hated for fucking w this model.

I've known for some time that avoiding ads is important for this reason, but low effort content to "zone out to" can also slowly make you depressed. Fill your life with beautiful and compelling this and you may feel better. I will *still* watch "creepy humanoid iceberg compilation 3 hours and 23 min" but I do this with *intention* if that makes any sense.I DO NOT need to see the 3534235th video with a title like "Major UPDATE Trump Crashes out. Destroyed" (I mean, I wish, but come on)

@futurebird even if it's slow or for going to sleep, that's the value it has for you.

@wjmaggos Unfortunately, I think any attempts to automate will attract the typical cast of parasites. So, I wonder if a shift in values/expectations could make a difference. When talking about "holiday tips" @neckspike mentioned they they give a gift to their mail carrier. I'd never thought to do this, and it might not make sense in a big city, but now I'm considering it. Companies work around the folk traditions an expectations of culture but WE create those rules and can change them.

@wjmaggos @neckspike Who should be paid?Who gets taken for granted? We can remake these rules. Why on earth should only youTube make bank on a cute video of #picaTheCat. Pica wants her cut.

@GustavinoBevilacqua Well that's what makes those titles work as click bait. YES show me that he has been "DESTROYED" that would be very nice.

@futurebird Just have an ear to Pica's new evil scheme to get the advantage on murderous pigeons shenanigans.Just write it, send the plot to WB and be the new scenarist of the next batman movie.Due to corpotate editors/auditors interaction it will certainly downgrade to a Catwoman spinoff, but make sure Pica knows she was the inspiration of a ten season spectacular series.:batman:

@futurebirdYeah I've maybe started purging channels that have titles like that. They don't tell you what's actually happening for one, and the wording becomes increasingly more meaningless. Also just the casual ableism in some of these videos? I'm just kinda done with that. I can find my news elsewhere. I don't want to live in the leftist world where ableism is what we think we need to keep people informed.

@wjmaggos @neckspike Also, and I hope this is clear, but this isn't some call from me to be paid for what I make that passes for content at this moment. If I decide to sell content I will be very explicit about that. That is, if I ever complete this book.Mastodon is content too. I think all of us using it who *can* should be supporting servers, that's how social media should work.

@futurebird @neckspike but where do the parasites get in? we're deciding in our apps. I don't think the values/expectations change until people see another world is possible.

@futurebird @neckspike I think the missing piece is a protocol for fiat (not crypto) transfer. it would enable the model above but also make it easier to give a set amount monthly to mastodon servers but also all the services/apps we use. I think having to go thru different middlemen to pay really deters a crowd who uses (demands?) decentralized non corporate tech. #interledger

@futurebird In the 1960s Ted Nelson was working on lots of ideas he thought would be essential to making the Internet viable - one was micropayments, automated payments as small as fraction-of-a-cent to creators every time their work was accessed. This was hard to do so instead we got advertising and big aggregators.I think we'd have a much healthier web today if we'd found a way to make it work!https://caseorganic.medium.com/who-killed-the-micropayment-a-history-ec9e6eb39d05

@neckspike @futurebird my understanding was he wanted small tips and people having to click each time, instead of having it automated and in monthly chunks.we have a lot of new tech. countries are moving forward with easier electronic money transfers.I agree about the problem with the PayPal people but they are the same people ruining social media so we fight back with decentralization in finance as well as here.

@futurebird The majority of the things we all enjoy online are created by individuals sharing things.Dealing with the asymmetry of discovering and providing access to those things are where we keep getting screwed. Providing scaled infrastructure at the individual level is no longer "difficult", but it's the place where the grifters insert themselves. Top this off with the infrastructure to deal with bad actors.

@neckspike @futurebird the question is can there be no payment processor like there's no social media company here? my bank to your bank (preferably credit unions) like it's my fedi server to your fedi server.I don't think it's easy. I remember trying to use Diaspora back in the day. but maybe we can make it happen together if there's a shared goal.

@futurebird @wjmaggos @neckspike I do pay $3 per month or so towards my Mastodon server's costs. I also pay similar amounts into the Patreons of six different podcasts and two blogs. I subscribe to my local newspaper and support my local NPR station even though I don't follow local news as closely as I should. I buy books (mostly from Kobo now, though I still get my audio books through Audible) and music (MP3s through, sadly, Amazon.) I subscribe to Netflix and Disney+, and get most of my video content that way.I feel like it's definitely still possible and even culturally expected to pay for media. But I wish I knew how to set up my own media server, my own little "cloud" so I could access my books and music and TV shows without having to stream from Big Tech's servers.

@neckspike @futurebird I pay my bills using my credit union website every month. maybe we'd have to pay them a bit each month to make the number of transactions worth it but they do compete, would love to kill PayPal and having something like an email address for each payee should simplify things for them.

@neckspike @futurebird yes crypto brings a lot of shit with it. not the way to go. basically similar to the distributed instead of federated models of social networking here imo.

@marymessall @futurebird @neckspikeyea I just think we can make this all simpler and have less skimmed off by corporations.I don't think we'll care so much about our own cloud if we were dealing with the actual creators' clouds hosting open access content cause people were paying because it didn't feel like an imposition to pay for another service etc.if you make this much a month, the norm becomes you pay that much for your media. we each have a certain amount of attention time for media.

@futurebird @maxleibman I started avoiding ads years ago. I refuse to watch TV if the price is commercials. I pay for streaming to watch without them.Recently, I've seen advertising become so intrusive, I get physically ill.I visited the Saxx website, said no to the popup begging for my email address, and the moment I left, I immediately got an email welcoming me to Saxx spam. 🤯But I have one more that I just found that's wayyyy more disturbing...

@futurebird @maxleibman I started using Ancestry again, I've used it a few of times in the last 5 years, had a sub for a month once. There are hints that come up, one was for a woman who is very obviously not my dad.I recognized one of the photos that has been used to advertise to me on FB CONSTANTLY over the last few years, but not from Ancestry! Some other company snagged a pic thinking was my dad, to advertise to me about something else entirely! 🤯🤬

@wjmaggos @futurebird about 10-15 years ago, I was super hopeful for the #micropayments concept, and if that could be implemented, it would do what you're talking about. The only actual implementation I know of is L the Brave BAT, but that's basically gone nowhere.
