I just learned "buccal"As in "the lamprey wriggled it's buccal funnel with joy" is apparently pronounced "buckle"All this time I'd been saying "bew cal" like the car, the buick.I still like my way better. *grumpy*

@josh0 It's not even a real language just a bunch of words that became roommates and who all hate each other but can't afford to move.

@futurebird When you swab your cheek, you’re collecting buccal cells. That’s how I learned to say it correctly but not how to spell it very confidently.

@futurebird oh, that is unfortunate! (i thought it was like ‘boo’ but either’s better than the harsh truth 😹)

@futurebird That's the power of my French accent: I pronounce words wrongly anyway but with me it sounds cute.😊And am I the only one finding "the lamprey wriggled it's buccal funnel with joy" an oddly positive sentence?Much better than "Love, Live, Laugh" IMO.

@i_give_u_worms @futurebird I love all creatures, great and small, except for lampreys. Pure nightmare fuel. You can tell the current administration to start stocking lampreys in my room 101.

@jmjm @i_give_u_worms They aren't like that on purpose. Have a heart! And they are real OGs, the lampreys.

@futurebird The dentists (distinguishing buccal from lingual) all seem to say "buckle" and there are rather a lot of them.Perhaps you can blame some nineteenth century dentist whose classical education was lacking?

@futurebird welp. More than half the podcasters I listen to are saying it "bew cul"which is french, approximately.

@futurebird @josh0 saw a recent vid which said that we don’t know where the words dog, bird and boy, among others, come from. They think they slipped out of some regional dialect during the dark ages. How can we not know that???

@futurebird @josh0 And most of the interactions don't make sense unless you know about the three "secret" overlapping relationships/affairs.

@futurebird @josh0 English's main problem is inventing standardized spelling right before a collection of massive linguistic shifts and then doubling down on not changing anything for so long it's now not feasible. Particularly since you can't do "spell it like it's pronounced" when the range in pronunciation is so wide.

@futurebird I heard someone say "fecund" with the stress on the second syllable this morning and had to look it up to see which of us had gone astray all our lives (it was them)
