@crispsMaps are flat representations of a sphere engineered for various specific purposes. Place a strong on a globe, source to destination, that's the shortest air path. Maps are complicated. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercator_projection?wprov=sfla1 @bruces

@tomjennings 👍🏻 (note, typo 🚗🥕 , for 'strong', read string)

@tomjennings @crisps @bruces most of the cell-phone generation and younger do not have a globe... nor any actual paper maps for that matter. :-)

@crisps hmm. go try it! If you have a spherical screen, let me know where you got it! lolbut I imagine GE might deal with this.Try it and let us know!I don't have a globe either. Not useful. YMMV, etc.

@tomjennings @crisps Google earth (not maps) is a virtual globe.I think having a globe is very useful.I've got a theory where if you are convinced that Greenland or Russia are much bigger than they really are, something bad can happen to all of us

@tomjennings @crisps I still have my grandmother's old globe. :-)And I have string... which is another thing lots of younger kids don't use because of plastic, etc.But Google earth does not have virtual string, does it? If you zoom out enough that it looks like a globe the flat screen causes real string to not curve. If you zoom in enough that it looks flat you have the problems caused by projection.
