Running my own full-service, multi-tenanted & multi-domain email service gives me a remarkable feeling of power. It's is seriously cool (been running 4 of them for a bunch of years). In other news, Mailcow is superb - . https://mailcow.email/ (I run their Dockerized install)

@lightweight Yeah I need to do that, it's getting too expensive to send my email newsletter through mailgun (what I really need to do is to get all my services on a single server to really cut costs - maybe that's a holiday project)

@lightweight Are you still using Hetzner? I think they'd be leery of me sending a thousand emails a day

@Downes heh. Yeah, I use them for a couple mail servers. Another one to consider (recommended to me - planning to try it to maintain a diverse supplier base) is https://netcup.com

@Downes fwiw, 1000 emails is probably imperceptible compared to some.

@lightweight Yeah, but it's a torrent compared to most people & might stand out even at a provider like Hetzner

@Downes Usually the issue is if, for example, more than 50 (or some arbitrary #) emails from the same host are received by a single email provider (e.g. Gmail). That can trip a 'spam' threshold, in which case the IP of your mailserver could be blacklisted. To address that, you use an SMTP service - we use MailJet ($15/month for up to 60k emails or something like that)

@Downes I'd expect that most organisational email servers - I expect there're quite a few hosted by Hetzner - would send more than 1000 emails a day...

@lightweight According to their website Mailjet is $17/month for 15,000 emails :(

@Downes hmm - we might be on an older plan, then. We've been using it for ~5 years, I think.

@lightweight Yeah, I think there's basically a new floor price. I can afford it now, but I won't be able to afford it when my income goes down next year.

@Downes dang. Yeah, sending bulk email is tricky.

@lightweight I still want to get all of my applications on a single server though - multiple domain names, multiple services, all on one vps. So I don't need to spin up a new vps every time I want to add another function (that's just way too inefficient and costs more than I'll be able to afford next year).

@Downes Yup, that's possible - I've got servers with a dozen services running on them (including a Mailcow instance). It's just a bit more involved, setup-wise, as most project's Docker implementations, to be as simple as possible, assume they're on a dedicated VPS. But the patterns are fairly straightforward.

@lightweight I found that trying to write Python scripts in a container on a VPS. No problem writing the script, but it isn't straightforward making it do things like read and write to external APIs and run Chromium (for automated browser actions).
