@RandomDamage Linux admin locked in a room, all they have is the Debian net installer and an ethernet cable that requires VLAN taggingTo escape they just need to ping the router to open the doorThe BSD admin watches the camera feed, takes note of the subject's curious behaviorThe Linux admin starves to death

@feld HEY!I might be able to manage that, but despite using Debian it's often one of the worst offenders for skipping basic tools

@RandomDamage it never used to include vlan, bridge, miitool, or ethtool in the installer so if you needed like, 100/half or something you were fucked

@RandomDamage funny part though is even if you know how to write the code you don't have a compiler either

@feld yeah, looks like bash has built-in TCP but not ICMP

@RandomDamage tagged VLAN is what I proposed originally so the first problem you have to solve is making the NIC emit tagged frames 😏 which is much harder than clever solutions to make TCP connections or something

@feld I can't deal with that without documentation anyway. So if it doesn't come up on its own I am screwed even if the OS otherwise supports it.With documentation I can probably find a way to tickle the right bits via /sys

@RandomDamage ooooh can that be done with something in /sys? is that all the tooling does? that would be fascinating, I'll have to spend some time looking into that

@feld I'm obviously not 100% certain, but that *is* what an awful lot of tooling uses so it's where I would look first

@RandomDamage yeah I don't know why I've always assumed they were something more special than that. Perhaps a long long time ago they were, like 2.4 and early 2.6 kernels
