@mekkaokereke as a very white person: rich white people are so commonly racist that I noticed it on my own once I was exposed to them fairly regularly, and I am both white and not very observant of people in generalIt's that bad.Poor/working class white people are sometimes racist, but rich people are just Out There with it

@stux this discussion keeps happening, and by far the largest correlating factor for gun violence is whether the country in question is involved in a war (not necessarily on their own soil)The US was on a good track in the '90's even before the federal assault rifle legislation went into place, and the trend reversed when we responded to 9/11 by invading everywhere

@foone cost reduced engineering is the bane of quality products everywhere. The investors will cut $1 off the production cost of a product that customers would gladly pay, then charge them the $1 anyway

@futurebird as an old DB guy who cares very much about this, life can be much easier if you have European clients.Gender of any sort is one of those fields your company *does not need*, it's merely traditional to include it.So you can use that to note that under GDPR it's best if you don't collect it at all

@feld Luigi should get off because he didn't do it.We're getting the hard sell in the media that he's the guy, and that should be making *everyone* suspicious, but for some reason it isn't

@clacke the East India Company was made of people.Computers can only be as dangerous as the people running them, and there's no additional threat from advanced AI

@clacke like I said, I'm not seeing any additional risk here. We've already got corporate organisms that are massively dangerous and regularly make decisions that kill peopleAdding synthetic actors to this doesn't actually make things materially worse in my view, Roko's Basilisk is sitting in the US Oval Office

@clacke yeah, looking back at your earlier comments I don't see any disagreement that I think really matters.

@wolf480pl well if the thickness increases in use, the battery life can reasonably be assumed to approach zero

@feld That's what people did before the ACA.It won't break the system more than it's already broken.

@futurebird @Phosphenes @bovaz @aurochs I settled here after losing several commercially run on-line communities.Being able to lose a server but keep your community is a feature that people who *haven't* gone through that wouldn't appreciate quite as much
