@vkc Counterpoint: I have been exposed to a *vastly* broader set of people, cultures, viewpoints, ideas, music, and lifestyles than I would ever have had a chance to without social media. It’s not all downsides.

Keeping a diverse outlook on life by examining alternative schools of thought to your own, challenging your own beliefs or even incorporating other beliefs into your own is how we grow as people both emotionally and intellectually. It's why I personally try to keep up with content from either side of the political aisles so that I can have a nuanced understanding of the current political climate and offer my own insights to it. I understand the comfort that comes from sheltering oneself in safe spaces from the corrosive elements of society. However, that will only result in the creation of an echo chamber where views that align with your own can exist unchallenged and thereby leave no room for further growth as a person and ultimately contribute to the radicalisation and polarisation of the current political climate. Where people talk past each other rather than with.@mattwilcox@mstdn.social @vkc@linuxmom.net

Cannot agree with you more. Nuance is dead in the age of culture war and identity politics which truly is a shame. Universities were supposed to be a marketplace for the exchange of different philosophies but have instead became dominated by a particular school of thought. Leaving no room for the discussion of anything to the contrary. There's not really much we can do personally to address the overbearing political climate though. Voices of reason are often or not drowned out by the masses that have been radicalised by either side of the political spectrum.A friend of mine still has faith in the masses to course correct by removing stagnant political parties, but I've grown far too jaded in my years.@xaetacore @mattwilcox@mstdn.social

@Saorsa @mattwilcox@mstdn.social You and me both, most Europeans here are Jaded beyond belief there is a real fatigue due to political parties not working with each other, and ruling political parties not listening to the opposition making the assumption their opinion is better because people voted for their representatives while any rational thinking human would agree that every perspective holds value

@xaetacore @Saorsa On the topic of politics - I have largely given up debating it for now. And largely decided that this situation we're in is inevitable and - generally - blameless. Systems do what they do as emergent properties, and they feedback - we're headed for much worse before it can get better IMO, because we've mostly gone past how our politicial systems can be steered by those not in power. Influence got concentrated by those in power again. All governing systems end this way.

@xaetacore @Saorsa (To be clear - I will still vote, and I will still do what I can with the system as it is; but I don't expect anything to meaningfully change until there's - essentially - revolution or war to force the issues. We're very close to past the point of self-regulating democracy, because the systems of democracy have largely been hijacked. Gerrymandering, ancient politicians, etc etc. It's become defective and cancerous - hence... extreme nationalism as last resort for control)

I'm not all that famous either, so unfortunately I'm unable to offer any nuanced insight into the matter. I just know that if social media is having a detrimental impact on your mental health, then you should either reevaluate your relationship with or remove it from your life.I suffered from major depression for a good couple of years until recently and had an unhealthy relationship with social media wherein I would immerse myself with toxic communities that would bully me and had refused to leave. It was definitely having a tangible impact on me which helped me recognise now when I'm getting too personally invested in something and know when to step back.I know that it is easier said than done to adopt my position towards social media as it came at the expense of trauma. But by not getting too invested in social media and concerning myself with the views of others, I'm able to engage with a platform without risking any harm to my mental health by keeping that degree of separation between my social life and interaction with strangers online.@mattwilcox@mstdn.social @xaetacore@neondystopia.world

Perhaps "getting more attention than the average person" combined with "people don't see a person in a stranger's post" is a core problem. Social media can create that combination. It sucks when you get a large audience's attention, who don't have a real connection with you, aren't thinking about you as a person; and you get to see all the many examples of people behaving in the same ways "at" you. It's draining.I love the benefits, as long as I'm not popular.@xaetacore @vkc @Saorsa

@Saorsa Yeah. I think "what you can do" that's effective to maintain your quality of life changes with the different levels of engagement you're subjected to. But it blows really hard that simply being yourself can attract a crowd large enough that the only effective methods of not being driven nuts is to either become a sociopath or to treat platforms as post-only. @xaetacore @vkc

Varonica's the quirky nerd that we either all have or wish we had in our friend circles. That's what drew me to me to their content, I vibe with that once I get used to a person's quirks.Lunduke released a video not long ago detailing his own experiences on X which is an interesting parallel to our discussion and is definitely worth watching even if you find the fellow to be unpalatable. I found the manner by which he isolated problematic countries by engagement metrics to be a facinating way to filter out some of the less than savoury engagement while limiting the collateral damage to your audience. @mattwilcox@mstdn.social @xaetacore@neondystopia.world @vkc@linuxmom.net
