       Wow, if you search for signal messenger on DuckDuckGo using Chrome, the actual @signalapp web site is the *third* entry following ads for “Signal Private Messenger – Free Download” that leads to the site appmaus.com and “Get Signal Messenger | Install Signal App” that leads to the site filelocations.com.DuckDuckGo should be held criminally liable for anyone who ends up downloading malware because of this.CC @Mer__edith #DuckDuckGo #Signal #adtech #teachingPeopleHowToGetPhished #malware #security #privacy #BigTech

       @Mer__edith @signalapp @aral I think the time is long last when search engines and their ilk have to bear responsibility for some of the shit that happens. If they are making cash out of this then they can be held at least financially liable…

       @aral @signalapp @Mer__edith This is what is shown on the Startpage search engine when one searches for Signal. But be aware that this Chromium-based browser, with additional privacy and security features, has a system-wide secure DNS filter. 💡 https://mullvad.net/en/help/dns-over-https-and-dns-over-tls"https://all.dns.mullvad.net/dns-query"

       @RFancio @bzzzwa @signalapp @Mer__edith Well, no, the ads are DuckDuckGo’s. But there is definitely a difference between who is shown what depending on the browser.

       @aral @RFancio @bzzzwa @signalapp @Mer__edith the implication being, that Chrome/Safari users have already opted-in to installing malware?

       @aral @RFancio @bzzzwa @signalapp @Mer__edith Which signals does DDG use when selecting adverts? IP address? Current browser? The current search, obviously, sure. The user's language? It may explain why people are getting different results. (It's a DDG fault, of course, not related to a specific browser — unless one is using a browser with ad blocking, then no ad will ever appear)

       @aral @signalapp @Mer__edith the ads are not managed by DDG, but instead by Microsoft (Bing).You can disable ads in DDG settings, you don't even need an ad blocker.

       @aral @signalapp @Mer__edith Yes, something’s not right over at DDG. I was trying to find a small regional hobby store website and even though I typed in the exact name, I got multiple lines of ads then multiple lines of unrelated big corporate stores. The one that I was looking for was at the very bottom of the page.

       I feel like DGG could be liable because 1. They know, or they ought to know, who they are advertising for, 2. The sites they are advertising are malicious, and 3. The warnings (Ad tag) is inadequate and defective.

       @aral It's because of how Chromium works compared to Firefox. This is why EVERYONE should ditch Chrome and Chromium-base ASAP.
