This video about NYC accents is amazing. But a few observations:1. Tyriq has a gay black men's Brooklyn accent. Jones didn't mention the gay part, but it's a thing.2. People in the comments are calling Tyriq's accent "new" ugh NO. It's at least 30 years old.3. As a person from Ohio the kids DO have NYC accents. It's changing, but I hear it. Bronx/Brooklyn/Manhattan not the same.As a 20 year transplant when I go home I'm told *I* have one. This is cannot be true. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wLy-vzLi3E

It's kind of fascinating that there is a gay men's accent like an overlay that some gay men do. They kind of dare you to say anything negative about it. But I think it's awesome. I wonder why there is no lesbian accent or bisexual accent... UNLESS. *sits up very straight*

@futurebird London has at least four accents going, though there is much overspill into the the surrounding counties. My home town was extended to accommodate Londoners moving out into the countryside during the 60s and 70s, it drowned out the local accent.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London#Accents#London #Accents

I think one of the benefits of "sounding gay" is it's off-putting to homophobic people so they don't waste your time.

@futurebird I genuinely believed, as a young person growing up on the West Coast, that my mother doesn't have an accentthat all changed the afternoon I disembarked at JFK

@futurebird could it be, that the whole “feminizing” aspect of queerdom has related accents? some of my fluid femfriends share expresssions with lesbians, so maybe there is a converse!?

@futurebird That's an interesting point. I know a few gay men who definitely have a "gay" way of speaking (and many gay men who do not)...but of the many lesbians I know, I can't think of any who have a specific "accent."

@futurebird Story of my life prior to coming out as a trans lesbian. I wasn’t even aware of it until I was in my thirties. I laughed when it was brought to my attention and the first thing I thought was, “This is like homophobe repellent; I don’t see a downside.”

@futurebird When you first moved to New York did people comment on your Ohio accent? I was told I had a Wisconsin accent by people that I thought sounded exactly like me.

@BLTpizza I didn't get many comments, but people knew I wasn't born in NYC without asking. Now and then people will ask, which surprises me.NYC natives can still tell I'm not from here but other people can't.

@futurebird I have a specific Northern Westchester accent that's made up of Southern Italian plus Eastern European Jew plus County Waterford. My grandfather still had Waterford vowel stresses even though he had been born here (in my hometown). The younger generations from my hometown should have all that plus a strong Guatemalan influence.

@futurebird Another benefit of "sounding gay", even if you're a good looking bisexual dude, is to keep the fatal attraction type chicks away, and off your case. 😈 A rock star has got to make music, not marry every single groupie who claims to be madly in love with them. 🎵

@wx1g @gay_ornithischians The guys I know who have it claim it 'just happened' and they don't know how. (I believe this.) It's hard to develop any natural sounding accent on purpose. One of the great mysteries. The accent we have is the one we can't hear AT ALL.

@futurebird Pronouns in bio are a good way of accomplishing something similar online, and anyone can do it. When people give you shit for it, you can block/ignore them.
