Design Challenge:In the tiny kitchen I must have TWO objects on the floor that I trip over:1. Waste Basket (Because it's an apartment it's like those at the office, small and simple a bucket.)2. step stool (because i am short)It seems to me that this could be somehow made into one object. A garbage can I could stand on. Yes I could turn it over but I think you can see how that is not ideal. Any designers out there looking for their big break?

@futurebird I can't help you with the garbage can thing, but I have a stepstool and it has a little strap on the side because it's actually designed to be carried to festivals and things and used as an actual stool to sit on, anyway I hang it off the side of my bakers rack and when I need it, I just take it down and put it up and you can adjust the height and then when I'm done, I collapse it again and hang it back up

@alienghic It would need a handle like a broom sticking up so you don't need to touch the trash just to move the stool. Maybe with a bike grip, like the rubber ones on vintage kids bikes.

@futurebird I can picture it in my mind. Solid, sturdy, steppy, and ofc the top part is a lid that you can also step on. The bottom step is also a hinged separate compartment and that’s where you keep a roll of trash bags (or snacks, if you’re nasty).

@futurebird Top engineers and park rangers have yet to design a trash can that keeps out the smartest bears but can still be operated by the dumbest humans.

@futurebird I found this, I'd add a step (figure), you could probably find a small plastic wastebin that would fit. Maybe the smaller step could be for trash and the bigger recycling.https://www.reddit.com/r/BeginnerWoodWorking/comments/10incxb/made_a_stepping_stool_trash_can_since_my_kids/

@futurebird Imagine if you will, a small trampoline used instead of the step. You position the trampoline so that when you throw trash at it, the trash bounces out an open window into a full sized trashcan below. You do need to be careful when you use it to reach things though.

@futurebird it's not even very hard to design. put the garbage can under the highest step, make the lid sturdy enough that it won't break from standing on it. it seems like this could already be solved but we have LLMs and fucking trillionaires instead.

@futurebird (IMHO) In the workman's shop, combination tools fail. Neither tool does correctly what it should. Make the wastebasket tall so you don't trip.A step stool that folds will end up breaking.

@futurebird Maybe take some inspiration from a convertible chair/stepstool like https://www.rockler.com/convertible-step-stool-chair-plan, but in place of a chair seat would be the wastebasket lid, with the receptacle below.

@haaseg @futurebird I’ve revised my suggestion. I think a box with a fold down stair would be the most efficient.

@futurebird Where would you like these objects to be relative to other parts of the kitchen? That is, would you prefer a garbage can be close to the sink, or the stepstool nearest the cabinets or fridge? What is the layout of the kitchen, if you don’t mind me asking, because I’d think a design that meshes with, say, an inbuilt island or table might reduce tripping more by dint of associated height than necessarily the merging of furniture.

@WhiteCatTamer It's too small to have an island and I don't like the trash in a cabinet, it's kind of gross to me? I take out the trash every day we have a shoot in the hall. So used bags in a simple open bucket work great. I move both the can and the step frequently to where they are helpful.

@futurebird Hmmm, what about a collapseable stepstool that you hung from a hook? Or would that be too annoying to set up when needed?

@futurebird I feel like there are two design modes: a lid that lifts up and is the top step or a side entry hole for the trash.

@ericbono It was VERY expensive. It's the only furniture I've ever bought anywhere near that price and one of only a few purchased items at all.But it make the room. I've wanted one for decades and about three years ago made the plunge. So happy. It's so elegant and functional.

@futurebird Would need to find hinges that are sturdy enough for you to stand on the lid without deforming.Maybe some handholds on the side.I'd actually hinge it on the other side, so you don't accidentally open it with your foot while stepping onto it.

@futurebird Another option is that the back flips down, potentially sturdier than hinges at the top.

@MCDuncanLab This lean out thing? I love it. I have no idea how to make it. Really if I can find something to modify even better. But I think having so much weight on the lid would be bad. It would mean the lid needs to be too robust to be easy to lift. But this I like. *pondering*

@futurebird @MCDuncanLab The problem, I think, is that a wastebasket tall enough to be easy to use is too tall to work as a step. Our kitchen waste basket doubles as a stool for sitting; that works well. But for standing you'd need multiple steps, which is not what most people look for in the kitchen.
