"Things that make your home look DATED!"The implication of these kinds of observations about interior design is that looking dated is bad and you ought to do something about it. I would like to totally question the premise. What does it mean when something looks "dated" it reminds you of the past? It recalls a trendy thing that has been forgotten. It's "out."There is power in this, and fashion and design is all about things that give us powerful emotions.

What is much worse to me than something looking "dated" is when you can tell that someone is desperate trying to hide or work around the out of style elements in a space to make them fit with the new trends. Then they end up failing twice. Embrace the old and ugly. Here are some bathrooms that are "dated from the 90s"Can you feel the ick? But it's kind of amazing, right? It would be a shame to try to make these spaces look like the hyper smooth, "mall zen" that's "in" right now.

@futurebird Yeah - and home improvement is so expensive and a lot of work and hassle, so there is really no reason to rip out your kitchen because it has the wrong color. If it works, just keep it

@futurebird I’ve always liked comfortable. Clean and well-maintained, but comfortable. I want people to feel at ease and relaxed in my home. There is no formal space. Take your shoes off when you come in, and lounge where you will. I have good taste, and artistic sense. My kids say I have “expensive taste”, but I just prefer to purchase quality items, and hold on to them for the long term. I doubt anything I own will be used by my kids — I guess that was a generational thing?

@futurebird honestly i could not care less what the house i'm in looks like, as long as it's unique and interesting. i feel like the current house style doesn't accomplish that. (on the topic of interesting houses, check out @weirdestate!)

The only way to make those bathrooms not look "dated" is to totally rip them out and start over. And if they are functional enjoyable spaces to me that's criminally wasteful. Here are the spaces that have been deemed to be in style (for the moment) I love these too. What I love is the hot running water, the big tub and the interesting durable materials.

@futurebird I live in a house that was a quality build in the 90s. The 1st owner spent a lot doing quality work. Their taste kind of got stuck with the 90s. We moved in about 10 years ago. I'm really reluctant to redecorate. Mainly because I'm lazy. But also because everything is still functionally fine. Ok, I've had to splash white paint over their love of yellow cream. And silicone sealant has had to be replaced. But ripping it all out when it's robust, clean and works... Seems like a waste.

So my suggestion is that we recognize what is "dated" but not take it as a negative. There is something about something the way that dated design can catch your eye, make you cringe a little and say "wow we don't do that anymore" that's really exciting. Why not lean into it if the space is functional and enjoyable? That's a bold style choice. And in a few moments you'll have people wanting to copy you because the durable and functional "dated" design is the mother of "vintage" and "classic"

@futurebird I feel like if something looks "dated" and "ugly" after 10-20 years, it was always ugly. 70s wallpaper was hideous in the 70s too. Zillow Gone Wild may present the worst case scenarios of "it seemed like a good idea at the time," but it illustrates the principle: ugly is just ugly, and chasing trends in home decor is indeed criminally wasteful.Sometimes hilarious, though.

@futurebird surely I'm not the only one to have a weakness for old (pre-1940s, preferably pre-1920s) construction (as long as it's brought up to modern comforts, like decent electricity wiring, district heating, plumbing etc)? These high ceilings... painted ceilings in common areas... all the decorative elements... wooden plank floors... enormous bathrooms with windows...

@futurebird When I moved in, I had a 💩 -brown bathroom uglier than in the first photo, with the same floor tiles on the walls, and a 💩 -coloured sink/bathtub. You can change a lot with decoration: I painted the walls above the tiles white, installed Art Deco lights with chrome arms and new taps. Plus lots of green plants. (I love my own style, which is a mix of antiques I have restored myself and new items.)

@futurebird I lean towards minimal water use (no tub) and instantaneous hot water rather than hot tanks. Also, since very little time overall is spent in a bathroom, that it should be small and the space allocated instead to 'lived in' areas.

@IngaLovinde @Bumblefish I love the way it's the same tap for the sink and the tub. And the shape of the sink is really cool. I think adding tiles to the side of the tub and giving the walls a deep clean so it's all those square white ones would make it look very cohesive. Whatever is going on with the side of the tub now I don't like. There is probably a good reason why the washing machine is in the bathroom. But I wish it were towel storage instead. Obsessed with that faucet.

@futurebird I just do whatever the hell I like with my decor, never been someone who sees the point in fashion. I discovered the previous owner had covered up the beautiful slate floor with oak laminate flooring, so I ripped it all up. People were horrified that I would do this as such a floor is considered unfashionable now, but at least I can feel the under floor heating!

@futurebird One of the things I notice in interior design is feature walls coming... In... Out... In again... Out again. Lighting is very similar, every few years it's recessed or standing. There's no technology change or anything it's just a push to make consumers redo everything.

@futurebird @simon_lucy It's time based. 40-50 years, give or take. A generational that did not grow up with the style will love it. I recently flipped my aunt's 1975 condo after she passed, that had only been partly updated. We were able to play off the vintage elements and make them fun and funky, but the more modern stuff was just tired looking. The gold marbled linoleum with glitter in the upstairs bath was awesome.

@futurebird From Nicole Rudolph's new video (now on Patreon, out on Youtube tomorrow) talking about why the new "Art Deco" is nothing like actual art deco, and is aiming for luxury instead: “Or rather, what the manufacturers selling luxury are trying to convince us. Often, that's a combination of technology, skill, and the opposite of whatever the last 10 years of style has been. The late 1970s loved earth tones and heavy textures. Soft pastels and smooth surfaces are new, trendy, and therefore expensive, because you have to have just bought them.”

@sinituulia I have a knee-jerk negative reaction to "art deco" lately because it feels like its going through this cheapification process I've seen before that is depressing to watch. It starts with authentic materials and craftsmanship, hard to find examples of high quality design. Then this get copied with a few corners cut. Then there is a design short-hand for the trend. A few colors and shapes ... Then you are in Target looking at an "art deco" lamp made of plastic.

Find something else, or repair and celebrate what you have that is already durable, beautiful, and that makes your day better?I want to be clear I'm not saying I don't care about design or trends-- I love design and trends. But... I want more people to start them rather than follow. It's more fun and less expensive.

@futurebird You'd enjoy her multiple forays into "why the fuck is this like this now??" about it, she's bought an actual Art Deco house (as in, built in the era, when they didn't even call it that yet) and has been trying to make it look not like a mishmash of multiple misguided renovations since. 😆I think old is good! Find what you like and then stick to that as long as you possibly can, don't let the marketing convince you that what you like is bad. They just want to sell you as much garbage as possible.

@futurebird We had a friend who happily announced that she got rid of books soon after reading because having books crammed in everywhere made a place seem stuffy and old. Needles to say we ignored her aesthetics advice from that moment on.
