So. Plotters. You know, those printers that hold a pen and follow an SVG? Ten years ago I tried to convert a DIY laser cutting rig to do plotting and it didn't work out. I then tried one of the ones that draws on the wall with string and never could get it correctly tuned. After all this time is there a lazy consumer solution? Does anyone use a plotter on the regular and love it?

@futurebird I have to admit the idea of being able to use a relatively ordinary pen instead of incredibly expensive printer cartridges that run out if someone somewhere in the world sneezes (or at least say they're out, though probably not really) is certainly an appealing idea these days...

@futurebird I completely forgot those existed, even though I used to see (but not use) one almost every day. Apparently they’ve been mostly replaced by wide format printers. I wonder if that’s the same thing students are using to print posters before heading to conferences.

@ada @supakaity Is Cricut the company that wouldn't let people print without logging in online?hmmm maybe I don't really want a "consumer solution" as those seem to always mean giving up a shard of my soul.

@futurebird yes and yes! I've built a large string polargraph (7x3m) and use an A3 AxiDraw for making holiday cards. #PlotterToot has lots of other people making cool art with their plotters.

@futurebird I also wrote https://plotter.vision/ for turning 3D STL files into 2D wireframe SVG for plotting.

@futurebird Maybe @paulrickards might know of something but his focus is mainly restoring and renovating old devices.

@futurebird some 3D printers and lasercutters by now actually have a plotting mode, BambuLabs and xtool for example have such devices.Alas, not cheap, because the plotting is the add-on to the more highend products.

@futurebird IIRC one of the most common "languages"of the plotters was HPGL.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP-GL

@futurebird For years people bought Roland and HP plotters & converted them to cut vinyl, or added a UV lamp to expose film for stencils, or make a PCB, or even added a laser for cutting.I have an A3 Roland in the attic. It doesn't go well on parallel, but works on serial port with CAD. You can use an ethernet Serial server or USB Serial.Even 15 years ago drawing offices were switching to big inkjet printers using a roll feed that simulate a plotter. They convert the HPGL to raster.

@futurebird In the late 1970s and early 1980s, I regularly used an HP 9872 flatbed plotter, on an Apple II or Commodore PET, but I suppose it's debatable whether that qualified as a "consumer" product. It worked extremely well. For a device currently available, see the AxiDraw from @emsl I don't own one myself, yet.

@futurebird Soul intact if you rescue a vintage HP pen plotter, and set up an SVG to HPGL convertor, USB to RS232 adapter, and 3D-printed pen adapter.

@futurebird there is a pen adapter for silhouette cutting machines. i've used it a bunch of times and as long as your workpiece is small enough to fit on the mat, it works great. the registration seems to get wonky if you use unbacked paper / roll feed. any rollerball works, but gel pens / gelly writers seem to work best.
