@jae have you had problems with pkg being ridiculously slow to bootstrap on FreeBSD? I was going to install FreeBSD on my old Thinkpad last night but got annoyed after sitting for almost an hour waiting on the bootstrapping.

@gray personally i haven't had many problems with it unless network conditions were poor/latent. for reference i run t480 i5/32gb ram. sometimes state can get locked for various reasons. i've only seen it once, i just rebooted and started again.if you tell me a bit more here or elsewhere i can possibly give a hand.

@gray > it was during installation when trying to get the intel firmware for the WiFi card it just got stuck at bootstrapping pkg to install itmakes me wonder if it was like updating and somehow lost connectivity in the network stack. is it all squared away now?the x250 is really nice for its age. what's your specs on it? it won't win races, but it's a total tank

@jae @gray I ended up going with an Arch Linux install. I might try FreeBSD in the future again. It has the i5-5600U in it I think and 8GB of RAM. I’ve upgraded the SSD to a 500GB Samsung 860 EVO and the WiFi card to an intel AX210.

@gray @gray in the end have to compute how you want and what's best for you. arch is great. bsd is great. and i'd probably suggest for the initial setup going eth0. let me know if there's something you need help with in the future. i geek out on this shxt

@jae @gray yeah I really want to give FreeBSD a good run on it. I’ve used it before on RaspberryPi and used to run Debian kfreebsd way back. Also since I’m a Mac user for the most part it’s always been familiar. I was happy to see they finally got iwlwifi working properly on it.

@gray @gray @jae I've tried freebsd in my comfy arc but the WiFi didn't work so I destroyed my computer with a baseball bat and I haven't had any problems with any operating systems since

@gray @gray @jae but I prefer stuff like NetBSD or OpenBSD. I just want em to have a wlroots based compositor

@gray @gray take your time, it's not going anywhere :-) enjoy the process and curiosity (as frustrating as it may be sometimes)

@jae @gray the x250 is just a hobby laptop for me at this point so yeah no rush. I like Arch on it so far though.
