Let me be cheeky and preempt @pid_eins's systemd 259 mastodon posts:In systemd 259, I'm making it possible to run commands that need privileges as your current user instead of as root. With "run0 --empower", you'll get a session as your current user in which you can do anything that root would be able to do, without actually being root. This is extremely useful when you need to run something with privileges but still want all created files and directories to be owned by your current user.

I got inspired to implement this when I was playing around with bpftrace and systing and got annoyed that the files written by these tools were owned by root instead of my own user. Now I can run "run0 --empower bpftrace" and be sure that any written files are owned by own user instead of root.

@funkylab Instead of changing to root, we keep the current uid/gid and instead give it full ambient capabilities (https://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man7/capabilities.7.html). That's sufficient to pass all kernel privilege checks (disregarding LSMs). To pass polkit checks, we run the "run0 --empower" session with the new "empower" group as an auxiliary group and we ship a polkit rule to allow all actions for users in the "empower" group.Note that this won't work if a tool checks for uid 0 instead of capabilities.

@wolf480pl Processes of the same user should be able to send signals to it yes. I actually consider that a feature. Currently, managing a subprocess invoked with run0 or sudo is a pain because you can't stop it except by messing with input pipes or TTYs passed through to the subprocess.

@daandemeyerYeah I felt the pain of a sudo-ed process not wanting to die too.But then I wonder - were those protections there for a reason?I've never used run0 and from a quick look at the manpage it's unclear to me whether it's all-or-nothing, or if it can be limited to only specific commands like sudo. But if the latter, then I'd be worried that the user will be able to mess with that process using SIGSTOP, those two SIGRTs that glibc uses for its internal purposes, etc

@wolf480pl Effectively it's up to the user to decide if they're OK with their application running under "run0 --empower". If you're in an environment where you don't want the user to be able to mess with the empowered session via signals, then you should not use the --empower switch.

@meeper @fiore nah I'm gonna be real with you, ASCII is (unironically) the best thing to have ever happened in the entire history of the computing industry. establishing a vendor neutral standard of common interchange for latin text and having it hold for over half a century is an achievement almost unparalleled in the world, and as much as many of the extensions are less than optimal, having that core or that kernel is imperative to the preservation and dissemination of human knowledge going forward.

@allison @fiore Kinda wonder if India became independent earlier enough or the computer race was less anglocentric since Indian scripts since sanskrit are almost basically all the same, and devanagari has been extended to cover most other letters, so we kinda had a unified encoding for free. Also the reason thwre are 1-1 mappings for ascii to more or less any indian script

@meeper @fiore my main thing with devanagari on computers is the complexity of rendering it, scripts that can neatly be represented in grids are easier for primitive computers or teleprinters to handle and thus gave their countries one (small) edge in the computer race (outside of the obvious latin script, cyrillic, thai and hebrew were also early on computers for this reason, as were cjk ideograms once the issue of rom space for high resolution text display was figured out)

@allison @fiore yeah ik, I was assuming that it's slightly modified to make rendering easier, (technically possible if you exclude conjunct consonants and normalize type sizes. in which case its equivalent in complexity to latin + accents

@meeper @fiore reminds me of early japanese computers which more often than not were latin + kana only

@meeper @fiore also kind of reminds me of the absurdity of representing persian with a script designed for encoding semitic triconsonantal roots despite persian being a syntactically very normal indo european language, just with large amounts of imported vocabulary from semitic languages

@allison @fiore Yeah one of the things I dislike the most about islamic- is the absolute fixation on arabic whatever (or later persian as they finally reasserted themselves)Probably one of the major reasons sanskrit declined in india and a cause for a forced cuktutal ridge between hindus and muslims and that likely lead to pakistan (also maybe the whole bullcrap in bangladesh since bengalis mantained better so were perceived as less muslim or whatever) (not really islam ig, and arabs seemed to have improved after the conquest of persia) looking at indonesia.Since india was conquered by maximum persophile turks ig

@meeper @fiore "or later persian" that was pretty early on actually, with the turkic dynasties which took root post abbasid splintering. the abbasids did lean hard into arabic as a standard language of religion art and high culture, but that was just as much a product of their cultural center of gravity being historic mesopotamia as anything else (most of the groups in the region already spoke semitic languages like aramaic so it was a natural enough shift for them), and in any case, both the abbasids and umayyads before them barely engaged with india beyond the westernmost fringes of it which were already under heavy persian influence before the conquests.

@allison @fiore @meeper especially how proprietary and evil people tried to make UTF-16 the standard, but UTF-8 still has immortalised ASCII

@allison @fiore @meeper the LLMs had to learn how to do it from somewhereI also have a dmenu script that lets me look up an emoji and add it to my clipboard, I even have some emojis in comments in some code I've written (though I usually use it for math symbols and russian/greek alphabets, emojis were what luke smith shipped it with)

@meeper @fiore @allison i think the people who invented computers do get to be a little self centric on their computers tbf.
