@WandererUber @mangeurdenuage I’ve tried to stay away from Chinese boards. When I was nas shopping there were a ton of integrated cpu Chinese boards that have great features for a nas but I kept reading about problems with them and that they weren’t super well supported.

@john_darksoul @mangeurdenuage All they're doing in this case is soldering the same atmel chip on the board according to the schematic and using slightly darker blue for the solder mask. Says "UNO" on it instead of "Arduino UNO".Same bootloader. Same everything.

@WandererUber @mangeurdenuage Oh maybe. The people making it (it’s a prepackaged all in one mod) might change sourcing. Or they might get permission from Arduino. I’m not entirely sure how much money they’re bringing in. Espresso machine modders aren’t like a huge community.

@WandererUber https://www.home-barista.com/repairs/gaggiuino-project-t91138.htmlI don’t know much about microcontrollers but this is the most popular mod. There are some smaller mods that are just little chips, but they require more of the user to install even if you’re just following some guy’s instructions. This has instructions to install but pretty much works out of the box for gaggia and rancilio machines.

@john_darksoul geez that name's a mouthfulfirst of all they have a bog standard STM32 in there to read PIDs and pressure. That's "any ol' microcrontroller" territory, but I see why this is a kit now, what with the touch screen and all.Second of all they moved to closed source I found? And it is apparently preflashed, so you don't have to care about Arduino's licensing bs anyway, do you?So you're planning on getting the "plug and play version" right? Then it's not a concern for you. If you're not, then it's not a concern. Just buy a clone. It'll save you 40 bucks.

@WandererUber Well, no. I’ve toyed with the idea of getting and modding the rancilio but now I’m going to wait and get something nicer. The only feature I’d care about adding to that is some kind scale reader so it shuts off the pump at a specific weight readout.

@WandererUber I was going to get this guy’s kit https://youtu.be/434hrQDGtxoHe’s got instructions and stuff. Although I did seem some pretty cool scales that can integrate into the tray of a machine. They won’t have a visual reader obviously but I like the idea of it seamlessly blending into the hardware.

@john_darksoul technical side, got it. easy enough. Either the kit or just get the bluetooth scale and any board with bluetooth. Did you know you can use most of those with arduino studio? and you didn't need an account last I checked. coffee side, you know I don't drink it. Can I ask what the point of this is? What does a always-on scale do, that putting a measuring cup under it and using a stopwatch wouldn't? Not too familiar with how these machines work. So far I'm at >zero the scale when the cup is on>brew starts flowing into cup>liquid weight >target: stop flow. With a timer, I just assume that this would take roughly the same length of time every repeat so why have the scale?

@WandererUber Timed dosing is a thing and works mostly fine if you keep beans, grind size, and dose the same. Any change to those and your timed or water volume dose will be off. For my general purposes a volumetric dose will be fine because my goal is mostly to drink lattes with Costco espresso beans. If I want to try some nicer espresso beans though I’ll have to manually cut off the shot when it hits weight. Having an integrated scale grinder and machine means I only ever have to worry about how fine to grind the beans and maybe changing preinfusion settings.

@WandererUber Same roast levels it’s not going to see much of a change. Lighter roast coffees, which are sort of a newer thing the last couple years, are notoriously difficult to brew correctly. They require finer grinds and higher temps to brew and have a narrower band of forgiveness. You sort of are always looking to reduce variability and the most reliable way to do that is to offload steps to the machine. Really it’s only the light roasts that require that kind of precision though. Their main benefit is having more citrus and fruit flavors normally associated with teas which people seem to really like. If you only want the traditional darker flavor notes you don’t really need anything crazy.

@john_darksoul okay. interesting. so you're saying it would spoil their taste if you put too much water through one shot of these? That's why you need the weight limit?

@WandererUber So yea. A finer grind will change water retention and the higher temps mean the primary shot killer, overextraction, is much more likely. Overextraction will make your shot taste sour. I’ve had some cafe shots that actually tasted rancid, almost like the taste you get in your mouth when smelling roadkill. This can occur when your coffee is compressed unevenly causing the water to run over certain grounds more. This sort of can’t be avoided 100% because the grounds will do whatever they want. So you try to mitigate by doing other things like preinfusion or manual flow control on the extreme end. But yea if you switched from dark to light without changing your volume settings your shot would probably taste pretty bad. Or at least there would be a noticeable quality difference if you changed it as I think the volume settings in that case would cause under extraction.

@WandererUber I think you would enjoy a light roasted coffee. They really do have distinct fruit flavors. Or well I’ve only had ones with citrus and floral flavors. They’re similar to tea, but yea they are more of a pain to brew than tea. Well at least how I brew tea. I’m sure there are autistic tea hobbyists that do a lot.

@john_darksoul They do a lot yeah, warm up the cup before and whatnot. But it mostly comes down to temp and time, like your coffee there. Measured in minutes though and not micrograms or whatever. Some people spend some time getting the temperature right, then set a timer to let it brew. Once you kinda get the hang of it, you can do a pour over, then it doesn't really matter. I'll give it a try. If I'm at a place with nice coffee I ask for a light roast espresso or how does this work?

@WandererUber Depends where you live. Only one cafe near me has had a good espresso at all. You’d honestly be better off looking for a coffee cart as it’s more likely to be a real hobbyist looking to make some cash to justify his purchases. A place serving light roast espresso is probably going to be pretty rare. Most cafes have a house bean purchased in bulk with everything set specifically to brew that bean well, so they typically won’t even offer another option for espresso. Regular coffee you’d have more luck with but it’s still going to be harder to find than traditional. I’d honestly go to Reddit to see if there’s a reputable place in your area.
