@stux I love how some random person years ago described for me why we cannot believe in "catholics have to be good because of this past death stuff":Catholic doesnt have to be good. He can sin, go to priest, tell him his sins, and get a blessing. Atheist cant be blessed for his sins so he have to be good all the time.

@stux Just so we're clear, Trump believes he is the one true god. Not Yahweh. When he says do good, he means obey Trump, praise Trump, and give Trump things he wants. Do these things and, if you're lucky, he might throw a tax break your way as a reward. Don't and he will sic ICE on you. That is his one and only religion. It goes without saying that the man who has peaceful protesters tear-gassed so he can perform a photo op in front of a church is not religious.https://www.npr.org/2020/06/01/867532070/trumps-unannounced-church-visit-angers-church-officials

@stux Being good feels good. Being kind begets kindness. Helping someone else makes the world a better place. Religion or even faith is not required to know this.Donald wouldn't know anything about this. He's never been kind to anyone, ever.

@stux Yes - a lot of people have said this before, but I like the way that they said it on the TV show “After Life” (starring Ricky Gervais):Kath: If you don't believe in heaven and hell and all that, why don't you just go around raping and murdering as much as you want?Tony: I do.Kath: What?Tony: I do go around raping and murdering as much as I want, which is not at all.

@stux As an atheist who was raised Christian, I have come to believe that if your religion teaches an afterlife (including reincarnation) you can excuse bad behavior because the victims of your behavior will be rewarded in the next life. But as an atheist, I believe that this may be the only life we will ever have and I do not have the right to disturb someone else's life. This is not to say that never have bad moods, anger, temper, etc. Just that I aspire to not being a blight on others.

@stux I haven't met anyone who says that and isn't a total piece of shit anyway. They clearly don't believe the shit themselves but just want you to so they can take advantage, because religion is the best mental crowbar there is and they know it.That's who asks that question. That's who claims you need god to be good. The guy who wants to talk for God.

@stux A sentiment once delivered by Penn Jiliette: I worry more about the person that needs religion to be a good person than I do someone who does so without it.His exact quote refers to actual crimes, but still. The sentiment is the same.

@stux Maslow is a good starting point for the adult layman, to learn Behavioral Science. Othewise, with overlapping ecosystems becoming increasingly destabilizing; it's paramount to make Behavioral Science core education, and replace obviously inferior leadership, with the most ethical scientists."This isn't rocket science"

@stux Not only is Trump's logic flawed, he's also not being "good." Acting like wearing any religious label makes him a decent human being....So I'm not sure what good "belief" ever did him.Though, I'm pretty sure that's just more lip service to his base, and not something he even cares about. Dude says a lot of words that aren't grounded in reality. He'll sell a Bible, but he certainly doesn't read it or understand it.

@stux atheist here too. Empathy. Decency. Thinking and self reflection. It’s not rocket science. I think I also read a study about kids raised as atheists kinder and more moral than those raised with religion. I need to dig that up. So don’t quote me on it. I may be misremembering the details.

@stux Penn Jillette did a great essay on this in '05"Believing there's no God means I can't really be forgiven except by kindness and faulty memories. That's good; it makes me want to be more thoughtful. I have to try to treat people right the first time around.[...]Believing there is no God gives me more room for belief in family, people, love, truth, beauty, sex, Jell-O and all the other things I can prove and that make this life the best life I will ever have."https://www.npr.org/2005/11/21/5015557/there-is-no-god

@stux I suspect that those who firmly and sincerely believe in eternal consequences and absolute truth, will be more morally robust. The scope of morality for them is boundless. Even pain and death can be a price worth paying. For those without hope, morality is always bound by mortal context. They are more easily corrupted when the price of their principles is high.

@stux Most people don't use it as reason, but it helps them to be better. As a kind of guideline for themselves.Huge difference to what you are implying. I am not a religious person myself, but i understand, why people are religious or need religion to be a better human.Faith in anything can be strong and helpful, as long as it doesn't turn into ideology.
