@futurebird The biggest crime problem I see is a convicted felon (34 counts, with other criminal and civil cases pending) living in that big white building on Pennsylvania Avenue. Other problems, including the shooting at the CDC, stem from that.

@wolf480pl @phreaknerd European immigration into North America circa 1500 - 1700 seems to have "integrated" well.

@stux During the 45th administration I considered it a good thing when the guy in the Oval Office *wasn't* working. He did less harm that way. With the godawful flunkies working for him now, I'm not sure if that's still true, but it probably can't hurt.

@futurebird William T. Davis, one of the founders of the organization that became the Staten Island Museum, was an expert on cicadas. The Museum hosted an exhibit a few years ago which has since closed, but there's still some good stuff online. Davis’s birthday is October 12, if you want to celebrate. (BTW, a former curator at the Museum told me Davis preferred the pronunciation ci-CAH-da, not ci-CAY-da.)#Cicadas #FindYourBug https://www.statenislandmuseum.org/exhibitions/jennifer-angus-magicicada/

@futurebird @va2lam Here’s something I've been doing recently. When I'm at an event and meet new people I make notes about them in my digital calendar item. For example, yesterday I was a reading event, spoke to three new people, and made notes like "Lily is a photography student." At best I remember names without even referencing notes. Just writing things down aids memory. At worst I might forget a name but be able to say "We met at the Read-in Café, didn't we?"

@stux George chooses the sunny window; Washy chooses a blanket. Stay warm, kitties! And have a wonderful day, Stux & fedifriends.

@stux Washy reminds me of Patience & Fortitude, the New York Public Library's lions. Different posture, same dignified expression. Cats know they are superior. Good night, dear sir. https://www.nypl.org/about/history/library-lions-patience-fortitude

@stux As an atheist who was raised Christian, I have come to believe that if your religion teaches an afterlife (including reincarnation) you can excuse bad behavior because the victims of your behavior will be rewarded in the next life. But as an atheist, I believe that this may be the only life we will ever have and I do not have the right to disturb someone else's life. This is not to say that never have bad moods, anger, temper, etc. Just that I aspire to not being a blight on others.

@futurebird It's evil, but not for the reason you think. The problem reminds me that I liked geometry and was good at it, but that was half a century ago and I might be getting old.

@stux Good meowing! Washy looks so adorable in the basket! I am tempted to make a pun about wash in a basket, but all I can think about is the cute, slightly startled look on his face.

@stux ...but first, some cat calisthenics. A little stretching before bedtime can be beneficial. Good night and sleep well, dears.

@futurebird The overflowing glass seems a bit extra. Also, I don't like pistachios.

@futurebird I'm retired and only worked part-time and temporary for the last few years of employment, so none of these really fit... However, I am able to take the long view of my working life, in retrospect, so I will again say that none of these fit, but for a different reason. The "best" job I ever had ("best" meaning most satisfying and morally best) I got by starting as a volunteer. After almost two months I was hired in a paid role.
