@disorderlyf @sendpaws @krutonium "publishes, uploads, or otherwise makes available" does not apply to running software on my PC to compile source code on my PC to create firmware for the microcontroller connected to the PC with a USB cable, though... surely? Nothing's being published or uploaded everywhere, everything's local?Unless the Arduino IDE's gone cloudbased while I wasn't looking...

@jackeric @disorderlyf @krutonium They have a cloud editor but you don't need to use that (you can use the normal one).

@m0xEE I mean they're designed to be newbie-friendly, implementing a package manager in C++... to get someone's uncle started on embedded programming in support of some hobby project they'll need a bit of handholding. that's my experience being the Resident Arduino Expert in some hobby communities anyway

@jackericThat is true, there are use cases that can justify that. Yet, cloud-based things and microcontroller programming are things that belong to two different worlds pretty far apart. Microcontroller programming calls for tools that are themselves quite simple but this feels like including a power drill with building blocks for children 3-7 :marseydizzy:

@calcifer @jackeric @disorderlyf @sendpaws @krutonium True, I always forget that we even have things like WebUSB now — and that you can do almost anything from a browser :marseyemojismilemoutheyes:

@m0xEE @jackeric @disorderlyf @calcifer @krutonium ngl I hate chromebooks, spent the other day trying to make a printer work on it because it lacks hplip when it just works on Windows/Linux
