I was having some serious writer's block on stuff I need to have done soon, and my spouse asked me if I'd tried writing it out by hand. I was like, what, you want me to get a chisel and carve this proposal on a cave wall? But I did try it (on paper, not stone) and bless their heart, it is working!

@Sondra people on the computer! stop being interesting and/or horrifying so that I don't get distracted and can get some work done!

@ricci Try the stone and report back next time! I think there's something to be said for being focused and connected with your work. And it also makes you more likely to accept what you have, since the cost of revision is high

@jawnsy @ricci Handwriting on my supernote (and my reMarkable before they enshittified) is really good for forcing me to think... and for breaking me away from e.g. constant distraction from the socials.

@okennedy @jawnsy I'm still very happy with my Remarkable 2, it's the only way I read and mark up papers - but I'll have a look at the supernote if I ever need to replace it!

@ricci Genuinely trying to resist the urge to feed some LLM pictures of you and ask for a video of you carving stone tablets. Maybe a truism like: "The first rule of distributed systems is that you try your best not to do distributed systems."@okennedy

@ricci In all seriousness, the best accessory for my work is a notebook and a pen. I will sit down and write things out there and it helps sooooo much. And in case anyone is wondering, there is no real preference to the paper and pen. I don't think it matters much at all, aside from stuff that is obviously terrible.

@atsuzaki @ricci Same. The act of writing makes me focus my thoughts better and that it is a much more physical act slows me down, which is usually what I need.

@gwozniak @atsuzaki it's so hard for me, because I'm a very non-linear writer, but sometimes hard is what breaks you out of the rut you're in

@ricci @atsuzaki I will jump all over the place in my notes sometimes, and that's okay. The number of times I've written, "Well, hrm.. that seems wrong" on a line by itself says a lot.
