       People who are fucked off with Firefox's AI crap might like to try the Vivaldi browser. It does a solid job of blocking ads and tracking and has some nice features, with no LLM shenanigans. They run a Mastodon instance too.https://vivaldi.com/@Vivaldi

       @essjax @Vivaldi what's the downside? I'm sure people were yelling at Vivaldi for being <<something bad>> a while ago. It wouldn't be life if that weren't the case but I can't remember whether it was something serious or trivial.

       @Niall @essjax @Vivaldi The only downside for me is philosophical.Vivaldi seems currently to be the best of the Webkit browsers, but if I want real browser choice in the future I need Firefox to survive, at least until Ladybird comes on line.

       @leighelse @Niall @essjax @Vivaldi being proprietary is Vivaldi's showstopper bug.

       @monica @leighelse @Niall @essjax @Vivaldi good on them for publishing their rationalisation. I'm not even slightly compelled by it, though, I'm afraid.

       @monica @leighelse @Niall @essjax @Vivaldi for sure. I'm an unapologetic libre near-absolutist (my rationale: https://davelane.nz/proprietary) and am still quite happy with FireFox, having been able to easily avoid the AI stuff (I'm not a fan of FF going down that path), and I use unGoogled Chromium & Brave to access that family of browsers, so Vivaldi's not solving a problem I have.

       @essjax @Vivaldi Vivaldi works well, but so does Firefox. I turned off all the AI in about:config to be sure it stays that way.

       An updated list of Firefox settings to change in about:config to rid your Firefox of any AI activity:user_pref("browser.ml.enable", false); user_pref("browser.ml.chat.enabled", false); user_pref("browser.ml.chat.sidebar", false);user_pref("browser.ml.chat.menu", false); user_pref("browser.ml.chat.page", false); user_pref("extensions.ml.enabled", false); user_pref("browser.ml.linkPreview.enabled", false);user_pref("browser.tabs.groups.smart.enabled", false); user_pref("browser.tabs.groups.smart.userEnabled", false);user_pref("pdfjs.enableAltTextModelDownload", false); user_pref("pdfjs.enableGuessAltText", false);

       @lightweight @monica @leighelse @Niall @essjax @Vivaldi If anything, that's convinced me not to touch their browser."95% of our product is taken from the Chromium open source project, but oh we cannot open our UI code, somebody else would just take it and make a competing product"That is literally the exact effing thing that they've been doing! But they won't give others the same opportunity that Chromium has given them. LOL and then they claim that obfuscation is done to improve performance

       @Niall @Vivaldi I guess it's Chromium-based and not fully open source, which would put some off. I'm not fundamentally religious about that stuff 🤔

       @essjax @Niall @Vivaldi vivaldi talks home a lot, i mean a lot. Taken from their privacy policy "When you install Vivaldi browser (“Vivaldi”), each installation profile is assigned a unique user ID that is stored on your device. Vivaldi will send a message using HTTPS directly to our servers located in Iceland every 24 hours containing this ID, version, cpu architecture, screen resolution and time since last message. "Thats not a good move.

       @Sar @essjax @Niall @Vivaldi you should not use 'regular' firefox. @librewolf does a great job removing shit from firefox

       @Stomata @essjax @Niall @Vivaldi @librewolf Except for one small issue - no android version. I sync bookmarks etc between desktop and mobile. No mobile version is a dealbreaker for me.

       @Stomata Ahh, for some reason I didn't think they'd use the Mozilla sync 😂Worth a go then, so I've got Ironfox installed on my phone now, so we'll see how it goes, thanks! 😄

       @Sar ironfox disables webgl and some other stuff or you may look into ironfox section in settings and may enable some overrides if necessary 🙂
