       @maikel it's unlikely #deltachat contributors go for tying identities to insecure and tightly state-controlled phone-numbers. It would be tons of efforts and would derange us from our goal of providing private messaging tooling, easily replicable, useable and extendable at federated scale.   However, easing getting-in-contact UX flows are a high priority and under contributor discussions.

       when I first used Deltachat, I used it with my personal email address. I thought that was great, because anybody who had my email and delta chat could message me and worst case if I didn't have Deltachat, I'd get the message as an email.Apparently now the chatmail servers are recommended (although any email still works) and I don't know how that works with finding your contacts.CC: @delta@chaos.social

       @sam@chven.usI believe you can still use it with any email server, problem is — most mainstream email providers switched to OAuth2 authentication, which for them isn't a problem as their want everyone to use their "app", but otherwise it's a mess to work with — I have to use a proxy server in Python that facilitates authentication and acts as a normal IMAP and SMTP servers, so that I can keep using my Outlook.com account with fetchmail, msmtp and friends.I think at some point they've even added support for OAuth2 at least to Deltachat app for Android — but it still works unreliably, if it's not a background service that keeps running all the time, the tokens expire and you have to go through lengthy authorisation process again.This is I think they started encouraging people to switch to chatmail servers that do not have these shortcomings.It would probably only get worse with mainstream email and we would have "email" with the likes of GMail, Outlook and their friends and normal email. All these hoops you have to jump through seem justified in case with private and secure providers like Proton and Tutanota — but in case with GMail I just don't see why go through all this trouble if all your correspondence still gets tracked, packaged and sold to third parties.Chatmail servers seem like a reasonable compromise to me — you can always host one yourself if you're overly privacy-conscious or use one of the already available ones.@delta@chaos.social @maikel@vmst.io

       @m0xEE @sam @delta @maikel most email accounts work with deltachat. the only sharp edge is if your mail provider is really uptight about blocking ip space. that happened to me so i am launching chatmail servers for public use. if you or anyone needs access let me know. by the end of 2025 will have 4-5 regions covered.

       I think I can still use mine. It is my own domain hosted on mxroute. I just haven't used it in a couple years and I remembered a recent post where someone told me the chatmail relays were the way to go. I guess I didn't pick up on the reason why or I just forgot.        @sam @delta @m0xEE @maikel you certainly can. mxroute is the provider i was using too. jarland is pretty strict about blocking potential bad blocks. nine.testrun.org (default server for onboarding) is blocked which caused me issues. i still use mxroute since its paid for service emails but decided to only use chatmail servers for now. chatmail server had some tweaks to make it faster as well the encryption handshake works faster. there's also better support for bots if that's your thing. im vested into the ecosystem and helping where i can. was so glad to kill the signal can understand forgetting.  just celebrated a birthday and i was given tombstone cake.
