Up front declare: this is not a sad story. It's a very happy one. Via some tricky bits...Today, Nov 5th is a celebration day in our family. 22 years ago, my son had a bone marrow transplant (aged 23 1/2 months) for a horrendous leukaemia. We were lucky: we lived 30 minutes from Great Ormond St, kids hospital. His mum was the 2nd parent donor in history (she and I are matched to each other). He didn't reject. We paid £0.That is the greatness of a health system now being destroyed. 1/n

2/n There is no commercial value in saving the life of a 2 year old with a bad illness. But the difference between a society which will do that, and one which says: too expensive/pay yourself, is everything between a society I want to live in and one I don't.The boy in question is now a cheeky 23 year old who's just moved to Vancouver. No job. A bit of 'fuck it - it will probably work out'.As we always do we sent him a cake. Inscribed: "Glad not dead. Love Family".Think that covers it.

@JimmyB I visited London in December 2023 to see some programs in your NHS that we were thinking of running in Canberra. They said some of the key things in their model of care have been done that way for over 50 years, but nobody in Australia’s public health system is doing them yet. Not only is it free, there’s also things you do over in the UK that are world-leading in quality care.

@emmadavidson @JimmyB And everyone from the Tories to the neoliberals in Labour have been working for years to sabotage and dismantle it in favour of a US-style system. Sadly, we’re not civilised enough to jail people who kill people by proxy of government policy or corporate lobbying, only those that do it directly with their own hands.

@aral Odd isn't it? We had a health system which was the envy of the world (apparently), then you actively work to diminish it, & replace with American style which manifestly kills a lot of Americans each year through negligence and lack of access.I think they genuinely believe the lie that 'there is a lot of waste which can be eliminated' not recognising that the process of trying to eliminate waste is insanely expensive and ineffective. Same outcome: more dead people@emmadavidson

@JimmyB @emmadavidson Oh, I saw it happen with my own eyes. How folks like Nesta, for example, held events with invited US healthcare (read: insurance) startups telling folks in the UK that they were outdated, etc.

@aralI know someone who was working in NHS management, and his wife a doctor at an NHS hospital.Around 2015, the NHS was the most financially-efficient health system in Europe, by a decent margin, though partially due to spending cuts which reduced capacity to the point where staff had to be very careful about what and whom to spend time and money on. They still had excellent facilities. That would have been the time to increase the capacity. Instead we got Brexit.@JimmyB @emmadavidson
