@phocks literally one of the things we wanted to legislate in the ACT, but I didn’t get re-elected. We did manage to get the right to a healthy environment into our human rights act last year though.

@ewen @pluralistic yes, there’s a small level of non-compliance that is not administratively worth chasing. In Australia, we systematically and legislatively enable the wealthiest people to pay as little tax as possible, while they get social credibility (and tax breaks) for philanthropic donations. So what gets funded is what the wealthy donors think is a “worthy cause”, not what is democratically chosen by the community for support.

One of my favourite things at yesterday’s polling booths was being asked questions by voters who are new to this electorate, or first time voters. They genuinely wanted to know how our party’s Parliamentarians make decisions, and why the HTV preference recommendations are what they are. I think I convinced some young women to get more engaged in politics and democracy from those chats. I do love when people join in the making of governments. #auspol

Love being in an environment where people to be themselves. Also love closing my office door so I can quietly do online meetings while the person just outside the door continues to sing along in out of tune falsetto to whatever is coming through their headphones.

My work is picking up pace over the next few months, so it’s nice that the physical space I work in (on a university campus) is about to get quieter. Fewer students this week, and then 8 weeks of no students at all. I don’t know if I’ll appreciate the peace, or miss their presence. I don’t directly work with students at all, but I like seeing how energised they are to work on things they enjoy.

@daedalus is social media more like sugar than alcohol - some uses of it are more harmful than other uses? So education about its harms and how to manage them, as well as open communication about how it’s being used by children and young people, might be more effective than a simple “all sugar is banned” approach.

Damn. It has a wifi card in it. No more no-distractions airgapped desktop. Although I can just disconnect from wifi if I don’t want to distract myself with internet things.

@m0xEE I don’t even know where that keyboard came from, we’ve had it such a long time. It’s very vintage.

Having a parasocial relationship with Taylor Swift means you can stream her songs on Spotify if you don’t want to buy the album, but you don’t get to demand that she put time into making more music. People who like her music seem to understand this, and are more than happy to buy merch or vinyl or concert tickets and make her a billionaire. How does this apply to FOSS? Go read this by @daedalushttps://pivotnine.com/blog/open-source-has-too-many-parasocial-relationships/

@futurebird I have family in the Mexican War District and it really is an interesting city to walk through. Very different to the places I’ve lived (in Australia).

@overholt if it’s happening with any regularity, it might be worth talking to IT support. Maybe there genuinely is something different about how they’re using the search function, and the product owners for the online catalog can fix it so that it’s more reliable?

@futurebird tangential, but I remember in the early 00’s in Silicon Valley, it was not uncommon to see Palm font on office whiteboards because people were so used to handwriting that way. I know when I used Cirth in my notebooks for daily meeting notes, it was not quite as quick as regular handwriting or typed notes (I can do verbatim for that) but still very fast.

@JimmyB I visited London in December 2023 to see some programs in your NHS that we were thinking of running in Canberra. They said some of the key things in their model of care have been done that way for over 50 years, but nobody in Australia’s public health system is doing them yet. Not only is it free, there’s also things you do over in the UK that are world-leading in quality care.

@futurebird Australia has a payphone network with phone booths everywhere, and it’s now free to make calls to fixed lines and standard Australian mobile numbers from those phone booths. Very useful for people who don’t have a phone.
