@timbray @ww3real I think it was you who mentioned the depiction of post-apocalyptic Newfoundland and Labrador in The Chysalids. I think they would stand a good chance of surviving the chaos of 2038 pretty well due to their remoteness and high social cohesion.

The best analogy for this level of collapse is warlord era China, and it depends how invested Alon is in the Selva Clique storyline as to whether they'll eventually do a northern expedition and put things back together again. But I wish the mutants of Newf well during the initial bloodshed.

@Truckasauruslex @timbray @ww3real Funny, I was thinking a better analogy might be 1990s-era Somalia or the former Yugoslavia. Canadians my age have some memory of our involvement in both of those places at that time.

@wanderoo @timbray @ww3real those cases had natural fault lines to fall back on, and a smaller population by 1 or 2 orders of magnitude. In any event, you can guarantee the CCP did nothing to secure/dismantle the nuclear stockpile, so it'll be fun to see what happens there.

I forget if I ever pushed an update about China explicitly thinking about using these to bolster its own strategic strike force.

@pony @timbray @Alon @wanderoo @ww3real , I'm sure there are plenty of unsavoury types who could make them useful in some capacity, in the same way there were huge fears about the post-Soviet assets. Anyway, if I were looking for some kind of NATO intervention in North America, this is the excuse I'd use to get the right people to pay attention.
